Ever wonder who regulates Executive Protection? What “license” is needed? Who governs it? “C” or “D”? Good or Bad?

At ESS Global Corp, much like the rest of the Executive Protection and Security industry, we are eagerly awaiting the day when Executive Protection will have its own license. No more wondering if you need a C, D or any other letter in the alphabet license that there is.
For years, industry professionals have been trying to figure out why Executive Protection has been lumped under the same license as Private Investigation. Especially when the two industries are so extremely different. We all know that the State-mandated C License course covers about 2% of what you need to know to work in the Executive Protection industry. But the fact that Executive Protection is lumped under the C License has made it a bit more difficult for those with aspirations of entering the Executive Protection industry.
But, is that a bad thing? Let’s talk about Executive Protection being just under the D License.

What would happen if lumped in with the “D” License?

who regulates executive protectionNow, the requirements to enter the Executive Protection industry would be much easier if it were classified under the class D License, but at the same time, what types of individuals would now, by law, qualify to do Executive Protection work?
You got it!
Those same lackluster individuals that sat next to you in your D License training course that you said in the back of your mind, “I can’t believe this guy is going to be protecting somebody or securing an area!” Just think, you and Paul Blart working the same Executive Protection detail! The mall cop next to you during your threat analysis…
And let’s talk about what this will do to the pay rates in the Executive Protection industry. Now that any security guard qualifies as an Executive Protection agent (by law only), prospective clients will use those same security rates when it comes to pay. Additionally, you’ll see security companies offering Executive Protection services (because they can by law) and asking for security guard rates. This will totally undercut true Executive Protection companies and lower the bar for the entire industry. There are companies already doing this is the “D” arena. You know of them. They bid jobs at ridiculously low rates and then put out a Craigslist ad to fill them.

But, in reality, the answer is simple. I don’t care what defensive tactics or martial arts discipline you train in or feel that you have mastered, because the answer is always the same. ALL experienced executive protection agents will agree that the best defensive tactic we have as agents, that will give us the greatest chance of survival and least chance of injury to us or our clients, is AVOIDANCE.

Avoidance is our best defensive tactic.
This is not the industry you enter into to get a charge or to prove your manhood. As we like to say in the executive protection industry, “boring is good!” Why? A boring day is a safe day. It means that we have done our jobs so well, that an attack on our client wasn’t possible or was thwarted.
For that reason, back to avoidance and how it can benefit us by keeping the job boring. The moment we see a possible oncoming threat, avoidance allows us to go another direction, choose another route, pick another restaurant, and so on. We live to fight another day. It’s no small secret, the better the training, the better your chances are for employment. It’s true in every career choice.
So how do you choose?

Reputation

A good place to start is asking people in the industry. If that’s not possible, then Google and Facebook reviews and the Better Business Bureau are good starting points. Now you can’t please 100% of your customers, but the positive reviews should outweigh the negative.

There are no state tests, boards, or certifications. Unlike therapeutic massage, or diving, or CPR, or dozens of other certifications you can get with training. What you get when you are all done with executive protection training, even from us, is a piece of paper and nothing more. There are no Federal or State “EP Certifications”.
Though we are not required, we are the only Executive Protection School in Florida that is certified and approved by the Florida Department of Education. What this means is someone has reviewed our courses and our trainers. Every year, we spend days with a team from Tallahassee. We do this for you. so that you know someone has approved what we are teaching and who is teaching it. 

Location

Choosing a bodyguard school - ESSOver the past decade, many schools and universities have gone “online”. While we have no doubt that that is a viable option if you are taking accounting courses, it certainly doesn’t apply to Executive Protection.

What you need to watch out for.

Recent events throughout the world, especially here in the US, are causing ordinary citizens to take Situational Awareness (a class every EP agent should take), and high net-worth individuals such as celebrities, CEO’s, sports figures, and more, hire executive protection specialists for themselves and loved ones.
Consequently, many “schools” have popped up. Watch for claims such as…

“Get Certified in Executive Protection”

When choosing a facility for executive protection training, be alarmed when you see phrases like;

  • “Get your protection specialist credentials from ABC”
  • “Earn your certificate in executive protection at XYZ”
  • “We are the only school where you can earn 2 certificates in one training”

Know that no federal, state or government agency issues any “certificates” or “credentials”. Anything you get from anyone, including ESS, is a piece of paper and nothing more.

While some ancillary EP training, such as baton or pepper spray, have ASP paperwork, in the protection industry, there is no “license”, no testing, and no boards in most states. Executive Protection is usually lumped into the same category as Security Guards or Private Investigation and has little to do with either.
Yet we see training to earn your “certified protection specialist credentials” advertised online. Unfortunately, nobody is regulating these schools, training centers and trainers. Meaning, nobody regulates or monitors what is taught and who is teaching it. Anybody off the street could be teaching you false and/or misleading information and you are paying for it. So your “protection credentials” at the end of the day is a piece of paper from the trainer and nothing more.
So beware Executive Protection Training “Schools” that talk about the “certifications” and “credentials” they have for you, more than they discuss their own school’s “certifications” and trainer “credentials”.
Know that no single school owns the basic concepts of Executive Protection.
Sure, we’ve seen websites where they have trademarks (TM) on common phrases like “certified protection operator” or “certified protection specialist” to make them look like their ideas are “official”. Just look at these with a grain of salt.
While some schools and instructors will try to give you the impression they invented, own or somehow refined EP skills all by themselves, the simple fact is that everyone in the EP industry has learned from someone before them.

Do The Research – Executive Protection Training in Tampa

executive protection trainingAt some point, anyone that wants to work in EP will need to attend a credible EP School. Here at ESS Global, we’ve spoke with ex-law enforcement, security guards, ex-military and more that heartily disagree with that statement. But when they attend our EP class they are in agreement. “I never knew any of that.”
The bottom line is there is no school, no facility, no instructor, that can teach you everything you need to know in 1, 3, 7, 15, 30 or 365 days.
It’s just not possible.
What you do need to do, to begin a career in EP, is you need to get a solid foundation. That is what matters most. Not a piece of paper. For a building to stand the test of time, it needs a foundation. It’s no different for Executive Protection Training. Down the road, you can focus on other specific training to further your career, depending on the path you take. But you need a solid foundation without the fluff.

Said another way, the more realistic the training exercise, the more skills are transferable to a real-world situation.
