The Florida Security D License Class in Tampa is a 40 hour training that will teach students the basic principles of unarmed security including; physical security, access control, emergency procedures, and more. Skill development shall include report writing, interviewing techniques, accident and crime prevention.

The State of Florida requires this security training course to be taught at licensed security school and ESS Global is the only Florida Security School approved and certified by the Florida Department of Education.

Once students complete the security class, a training certificate will be issued for successfully completing security guard training. Students will then submit this certificate along with the security license application to the Florida Division of Licensing in person or by mail. Students will be issued a temporary D Security License and are eligible to work as a licensed security officer immediately, while waiting for the hard copy.

It’s perfectly acceptable for any school that teaches anything, to say “We are the best”. It’s as understandable as “best pizza anywhere” or “You’ve Tried The Rest, Now Try The Best” printed on nearly every pizza box.

But if you want to be a “certified executive protection specialist” you absolutely need to know that there is no such certification available – anywhere.

Not from anyone other than the HP printer at the school.

Fact: Any school can give you a certification that says you passed their course, but that certification is not recognized as a qualifier to perform Executive Protection services.

And any executive protection school that promises they can certify you as an Executive Protection Specialist without carefully explaining that their certification does not meet any legal standard is trying to take advantage of you.

It’s Predatory Marketing.

Because there is no legal requirement of certification anywhere for Executive Protection Services, there is no true need for any executive protection school to offer “certification” other than as a printed document to indicate that you passed their course.

Now that being said, there are less than a handful of executive protection training schools that are registered with their respective State Department of Education. And even fewer executive protection training schools are approved to accept GI Bill Benefits, or VA Vocational Rehabilitation.

Additionally, there are some real certifications that you may pick up as a bodyguard. Like CPR and First Aid. And ASP certifications for tactical baton and tactical flashlight for instance. Or Concealed Carry licenses.

But you absolutely need to know that any and all “Executive Protection Certifications” are a piece of paper and nothing more.

Promises of work

You should also want to be on the lookout for executive protection training schools that promise you work upon completion of their course. Simply put, the job market is tough out there and getting bodyguard work is as competitive as ever. And while attending a reputable executive protection school can open doors for you, no one can promise you work just because you completed their course.

A reputable school should tell you this up front.

Fancy course names and trademarks

Lastly, while you need to learn the basics when looking for executive protection schools, such as hand-to-hand combat, threat analysis, motorcade operations and more, beware of schools with exotic sounding coursework. Some Executive Protection Training schools even trademark courses and phrases suggesting their school is the only place you can get these trainings.

You’ll need to learn the basics without the fluff.

Executive Protection Training – What to Look For

D.O.E. Certification

Ideally, you should look for an executive protection training that has some sort of voluntary oversight. Choosing one that has gone through both the time and expense to be certified and licensed by the Department of Education is a good start.

By doing this, you are assured that both the executive protection training and the trainers themselves, have been approved by a another set of eyes. In other words, it’s real.

It’s a real “school” in the eyes of the state, that just happens to teach executive protection.

But, for many people, a concealed carry training class is their first step into the world of firearms training, and as such, they arrive at the class with no understanding of what lies ahead and how they should prepare for a concealed carry class.

Rule #1

A concealed carry class is a permitting class, not a training class.

As such, you will leave the training facing the realities of carrying, with a clear idea of the Florida firearm laws. It’s similar to a driving test, which doesn’t really prepare you for a daily commute on I-275.

So for this Florida Concealed Carry Guide, we have to hammer this home. Take a basic pistol course. Practice drawing, aiming and firing! Find a range and use it. Get comfortable with your firearm.

Deciding to Carry

There are many more factors to consider, than simply owning a firearm for home protection or to keep in your vehicle.

Will I have enough time set aside to practice at the range?
Am I prepared to act if threatened with harm?

Applying for a Concealed Carry Permit in Florida

Most states, including Florida, require a permit or license to carry a weapon in a concealed manner. Every state that requires a license also requires some form of training before sending in the paperwork.

You’ll notice that one reason you can be denied is “Failing to provide proof of proficiency with a firearm” which refers to the training class, where you will get the paperwork that tells the state you passed your ~~driver’s test~~ CWP exam at the end of the concealed carry course.

Here, you should talk with friends that carry. Go with them to the range and hold and fire their gun. Not everyone has the luxury of trying out a firearm before purchasing it so, if you can take advantage of that, do it. Go to the store and hold them. Does it feel right? If you are going to be carrying, you need a correctly sized firearm! Get one too “bulky” and you may quickly find to you no longer carry, defeating the purpose of obtaining a concealed carry permit.

Find one that is right for yourself and your hands/ body. Did we mention you must practice with it? Believe us, the first time you pull it out to defend yourself is no time to be unfamiliar with your weapon. Practice, practice and practice some more.

Do some research. Holsters vary greatly in size, shape, materials and quality. If it’s not comfortable to carry, it’s not right. Make adjustments to your setup until it’s comfortable for everyday use.

A quality holster is not something you want to shortchange yourself on. A holster is more than just something to hold the firearm in place, and it can make the difference between safe and responsible carry, and unsafe carry.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide – Choosing A Concealed Carry Training

The first factor to consider. Does the instructor or facilitating organization hold any current certifications as a firearms instructor such as: NRA Certification, D.O.E. certification, or other certifications.

Second, what experience does this instructor have in teaching firearms courses? For example, has the instructor taught firearms courses to armed security guards, law enforcement or military? Or is this their first batch of classes held in a firearms store, solely designed to get you in to buy more firearms?

Third, will you have easy access to their courses? Will this instructor or organization offer other courses to increase your skill sets after completing the concealed carry tra
ining? Remember, concealed carry training is only the start of your training if you are serious about protecting yourself and loved ones.

Carrying

So you’ve gotten your permit and can now concealed carry.

Two things are likely to happen.

Printing

Down here in Florida, we don’t wear bulky clothing for half the year (or more) like up north. You need to be aware of “printing”. This is when your firearm ‘prints’ on your clothing creating a visible outline when bending over, or reaching for something or simply shows all the time because your shirt is too tight.

Look in the mirror, play around with your set-up until you are happy and confidant.

Situational Awareness

Also, once you begin to carry, it’s human nature for you to become more aware of your surroundings. At first, you may be wondering if people around you know you are carrying. Now you may even be looking at people wondering if they are carrying. You are now a bit more aware of your surroundings. If you would like to take this a higher practical level, consider taking the ESS Global Situational Awareness Training.

Florida Concealed Weapon Guide – Practice Makes Perfect

This cannot be stressed enough. Practicing with your firearm is one of the most important things that you can do.

Find a range and be there on a regular basis to practice with your carry firearm.
Practice shooting with the same ammunition you carry. Different ammunition behaves differently. If you know what to expect, there will be no surprises should you need to use your firearm in a stressful situation.
Practice drawing your unloaded firearm from your holster. If you are ever in a situation where you need to get it quickly, this is where memory will come into play. In a stressful situation, you need to be alert and able to draw with as much consistency as if you were practicing with an unloaded weapon in your home.
Lastly, it is highly recommended that everyone who chooses to carry a firearm receive at least some basic handgun training. Going to the range and shooting is great practice, but a good instructor in a controlled environment can greatly boost your confidence, as well as highlight limitations you may not have even considered before.

A Florida Concealed Carry Guide would be incomplete without mentioning the 5 rules.

And these five rules need to be memorized.

Five Basic Handgun Safety Rules

Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction (down is great).
Treat ALL firearms as if they were loaded.

A motorcade is designed not only for the protection of your client but also to ensure the smoothness and comfort of his or her travels. This course is good for complementing other Executive Protection training courses that did not include training on motorcade operations, or for people who are already working in the Executive Protection industry but were never properly trained in motorcade operations or tactics.

A driver who is well skilled in defensive and evasive driving techniques can save lives.

Often an attack may occur while driving, and a driver who remains calm but acts quickly and decisively can keep his or her client out of harm’s way. This course is designed to teach you how to not only provide smooth transportation for a VIP, but also what to do in the event there is an attack on your VIP while you are driving.

Again, this is a brief overview of what will be taught as the full curriculum will only be disclosed to ESS Global Corp students. A large portion of the training is on the practical side and out on the road as this will be what the entire course is about.

In the ESS Global Concealed Carry Training, you’ll earn your certification to get your Florida concealed weapon license with our NRA certified instructors. You will learn the laws based on the Florida Statutes relating to concealed carry and cover handgun safety techniques as well. Our class takes 2 hours to complete. You will leave with your certificate in your hand.
Tuition $70
This course greatly exceeds the minimum Florida requirements for obtaining your state concealed carry permit. It is the most extensive, informative concealed carry class you will find anywhere in Florida. ESS instructors will give you the best possible classroom instruction and demonstrations. You will be required to demonstrate safe handling and perform a live fire at the end of the class. Upon successful completion, you will receive your certificate to apply for your Florida concealed carry permit.
