Well, according to the Department of Education, we are a “Protection School” so that seems to place us in executive protection. But if you ask the CEO of ESS Global Corp, Theo Billiris, it is only a question in the student’s mind.
“In our industry, that is, as it relates to the true professionals, we never call ourselves bodyguards. Reason being, is that bodyguard usually brings to mind the stereotype of the big muscle guy that has almost no brain power. These are also the same individuals that have little, or in most cases, no training. These are the guys that usually become a liability to their clients and cause them harm rather than prevent it.”
“But when we advertise training, we need to mention “bodyguard” because most people don’t know the term “Executive Protection” nor do they realize that true professionals actually exsist.”
Mr. Billiris believes the training provides the best definition.

“Most bodyguards never heard such words as Threat Assessment, Advance Work, Route Reconnaissance, Embus and Debus plans, area surveillance, movement safety, etc. These guys usually show up on the day of an event/gig and depend on physical deterrence. The problem with that is, there is usually someone in the crowd that no matter how big you are, they will still try something foolish. A lot of times, purposely, in an effort to get you to go hands on with them and then collect a pay day in the form of a lawsuit or out of court settlement/payoff. Just ask Justin Bieber.”
Then of course, how do others view the difference between executive protection and bodyguards?
“Security Professionals who want to bolster their résumé with a certification from a school that meets a standard acceptable to the government (D.O.E.) and to the corporate world and has a reputation in the security industry should call us. We are the only protection school in the state of Florida that is approved by the US Department of Education and only one of a handful in the entire country. So that stands out in a resume.”
What is the biggest problem in the protection training industry?

“What’s frustrating is that if you go to court, your attorney passed the bar. A standardized test. Same if you have open heart surgery. They passed the boards. These people are licensed. In the protection industry, there is no “license”, no testing, and no boards in most states. Executive Protection is usually lumped into the same category as Security Guards or Private Investigation and has little to do with either. Yet, online we see training to earn your “certified protection specialist credentials” and they are in “high demand”. Unfortunately, nobody is regulating these schools or training centers. Meaning, nobody regulates or monitors what is taught and who is teaching it. Anybody off the street could be teaching you false information and you are paying for it. So a “protection credential” is a piece of paper from the trainer and nothing more. This is where ESS Global Executive Protection School differs. We are licensed and our curriculum and instructors are all regulated and monitored by the D.O.E. And, only a few elite schools are D.O.E. approved and certified for executive protection. Having a government certified protection school on your resume is a big plus, and a great way to get started.”

Situational Awareness Training

Awareness matters now more than ever, given the reality of violence in public spaces, workplaces, schools, and houses of worship. In a sense, we are all responsible for our own safety. Situational Awareness training is as much a skill as it is a mindset. In the ESS Global Situational Awareness training class, you will learn the skills utilized by elite military branches and federal agencies, such as the Coast Guard and the U.S. Secret Service.
People typically operate on several distinct levels of awareness. There are many ways to describe these levels, for instance “Cooper’s Colors,” which is a system frequently used in law enforcement and military training.

Here is a Basic Overview of Situational Awareness Training

Condition White

situational awareness training code whiteUNAWARE/UNPREPARED. This is a condition you should try to avoid, as it means you will probably lose. You are daydreaming, and unaware of your surroundings. A fight, a rape, a robbery, an assault, anything you can think of you are oblivious to. The only time that you’re in condition white is when you’re asleep. And even then, you wouldn’t consider yourself unprepared; you’re just unaware.
If attacked in Condition White, the only thing that may save you is the inadequacy or ineptitude of your attacker. When confronted by something, your reaction will most likely be “This can’t be right. This can’t be happening to me.”
Unfortunately, too many people spend much of their lives in this state of mind.
The first level, tuned out, is similar to when you are driving in a very familiar environment or are engrossed in thought, a daydream, a song on the radio that suddenly takes your mind back to a place and time, then suddenly you’re at your destination without even remembering the drive there. Have you ever arrived somewhere in your vehicle without even really thinking about your drive there? If so, then you’ve experienced being tuned out. You’ve experienced Condition White.

Condition Yellow

RELAXED ALERT Yellow means you are aware of what is happening around you, but you do not perceive any potential threats. Your mindset should be that you are prepared to defend yourself if the need arises. Everywhere you go, everything you do, you should be in Condition Yellow. You should keep an eye on the people around you, and continuously rate each person’s danger level in your mind.
There is no specific threat situation. The Relaxed Yellow Alert is simply realizing that today could be the day I may have to defend myself. You are aware that the world is can be an unfriendly place and that you are prepared to defend yourself, if and when necessary.situational awareness training - ESS Global
The second level of awareness, relaxed awareness, is like defensive driving. This is a state in which you are relaxed but are also watching the other cars on the road and are looking at the road ahead for potential hazards. What if a kid runs out in the road, what if someone runs the stop sign? If you’ve had these thoughts when driving you’ve experienced Condition Yellow, Relaxed Alert.

Condition Orange

situational awareness training SPECIFIC ALERT This means that there is a potential threat that has gotten your attention. This can be almost anything and usually results in nothing, at which time you then fall back to yellow. An example of Condition Orange could be when you spot what appears to be a firearm under a bulky coat… Instantly, you determine exactly what you’re going to do if he reaches for that gun.
In this stage, something is not quite right and has your attention. Your radar has picked up a specific alert. This sets a mental trigger. “If that person does X, I need to do Y”.
Again using the driving analogy, this is like driving in hazardous road conditions. You turn the radio down, you don’t even think of looking at a text on your phone. You have both hands on the wheel and the road has 101% of your attention. We’ve all been in Orange. A blinding snowstorm, a dark thunderstorm, fog in the mountains.  That’s Specific Alert territory.

Condition Red

FIGHT/ACTION This means that you are in a lethal mode of mindset and will fight if the circumstances are warranted. The guy with the bulky coat draws a semiautomatic from under his coat. At this point, you now implement your action plan that was determined during Condition Orange. This doesn’t always mean fight. If you don’t have the means to put up a fight, your best plan might be to wait and see what happens or even retreat and call the police. But you took action on the plan you made in yellow.
Situational Awareness training code redThis is what happens when a kid does chase a ball right in front of you or that car you are watching at that intersection ahead actually doesn’t have any intention of stopping at the stop sign and pulls out right in front of you. It’s a gasp, a prayer and a rush of adrenalin. But you maintained control. You hit the brakes, you swerved to avoid. You functioned.
When you go to Condition Red, the trigger has been tripped. The “Didn’t see that coming” of White became the “What if” in Yellow that has now become “Plan for it” in Orange and “Execute” in Red.
The ESS Global Situational Awareness Training is a 4-6 hour course, depending on the size of the class and other factors.
There is really nobody who could not benefit from Situational Awareness Training.

But more often, it’s a political activist, an overzealous fan or a disgruntled ex-employee trying to force his way into the CEO office. It’s more often these “less than headline grabbing problems” close protection deals with.

  • What is the very first step in executive/close protection?

Get licensed in the state in which you reside and get certified at a reputable Executive Protection School. Licensed schools, such as ESS, are preferred as both our students and our clients can rest easy in knowing that the school has been and continues to be monitored and regulated by the D.O.E. On top of that, all instructors and curriculums are evaluated yearly.

  • What are the advantages of having a personal bodyguard? Why do celebrities and top business or political icons keep bodyguards?

Protection obviously, but even more so, convenience and making life easy. Example: when you have an Executive Protection agent, they take care of all planning on trips. Choosing hotels, restaurants, etc. and perform all security checks at those places. Then, when you arrive, you don’t have to worry about checking in or waiting for service. It’s already done. You don’t have to worry about how to get from place to place. The route recon is already complete. You just sit back and enjoy the trip. Leave the details to us.

  • What is the client expectation vs real life?

The best clients understand that we are there to keep them safe, which sometimes means heeding our advice/threat assessments and not going to some places they want to go.
Also, we often see that since nothing bad happens they start to think they don’t need us. The only reason nothing bad happens is because of what we do that they don’t see. Successful Close Protection leans strongly on threat assessments and security advances that they never witness.

  • Are there “cardinal rules” to follow?

Confidentiality. The best Close Protection Agents never become too familiar or comfortable – always remember they are client, not a friend.

  • Describe a “Typical Assignment”Executive Protection 3 - ESS Global Corp

Every assignment starts with a client interview/profiling. We learn about the client and their expectations. Next, we conduct a security advance of where we will be going. This includes site surveys and threat assessments of all places we will visit on the trip. We also conduct route recon on all possible routes between venues. Lastly, putting everything we learned from our advance team and putting it into play on the day of the detail. On that day we will protect the client and create an experience for them that was easy and relaxed.

  • What are the little things that make a difference?

At ESS Global, it’s our attention to detail. It’s important to really know your client, and that comes from our experience in the initial interview and our “Client Profile” setup. Do they like a certain drink or snack and having that in the vehicle or hotel room before they enter. Also, learning to remain professional and staying composed even if the client acts irrationally or becomes angry with you. Actually, that’s a big thing.

  • Do you use surveillance equipment?

Yes we do. For obvious reasons, we need to be discrete here, but yes, we use state of the art surveillance and tracking devices. It also gets more complicated when we are contracted with protecting the family. Sadly, sometimes the best and easiest target is a family member.

  • Do you carry weapons all the time?

No, we are only armed when requested by our client. It’s really quite different than it’s portrayed in the media.

  • What sets ESS apart from the rest?

It’s the fact that we are a D.O.E. licensed school as well and have the ability to choose the best students for employment because we are able to assess them through the schooling process. Most other companies who hire from other “trainers” don’t get to assess them until they are working. This can obviously become a liability.

  • Lastly, was there ever a time when quick thinking saved the day?

Everyday! Clients change their minds by the minute. You really have to be able to think dynamically in the moment. There is always a solution.  There is always somebody that knows how to get what your client wants. “No” or “I can’t” is never an option.

ESS Global Corp provides Florida “G” Training in Tampa – D.O.E.Approved D and G Security Training, Florida’s only D.O.E. Approved Security School.
As stated in the Florida Private Investigator Handbook, an applicant for a Florida Class “G” Statewide Firearm license must have a minimum of twenty-eight (28) hours of range and classroom training within the past (12) months.  This training must be taught and administered by a Class “K” Firearms Instructor.

The Class G Statewide Firearms License, issued by Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under the direction of Adam Putnum (pictured), is the license that permits any individual who possesses a valid Class “D” Security Officer license to perform the duties of an armed security officer while on an armed post or on an armed assignment. Further, the Class “G” license permits holders of valid Class “C”, “CC”, “M”, “MA”, and “MB” licenses to perform duties while armed.
Class “G” licensees must obtain twenty-eight (28) hours of firearms range re-certification training during each year of the 2-year licensure period (eight hours of total training required for re-certification/renewal).  Range recertification must be taught and administered by a Class “K” Firearms Instructor.  Renewal of the Class “G” license will be denied if a licensee has failed to fulfill the four (4) hour annual training requirement.  If the 4 hours of annual training is not completed each year during the 2-year licensing period, the individual must re-take the training required at initial licensure.
The ESS Global Florida Armed Security Officer “G” Course covers all information required by the State of Florida Department of Agriculture for Class G license applicants, including: F.S. 493, 775, 776 and 790, Firearms Safety & Mechanics, Civil Liability 7 use of Force Issues, Handgun Marksmanship, Care and Maintenance of Firearms and other related topics.
ESS students that successfully complete the “G” course, pass the final examination and complete the range qualification will be give proof of completion to provide to the State when they apply for ESS Global Corp - Security Specialists the Class “G” license.
Students that have successfully completed the “G” license must complete the annual re-qualification in order to maintain their “G” license status.
NOTE:  ANYONE MAY TAKE THIS CLASS.  However, in order for you to OBTAIN a Class “G” Statewide Firearms License, you MUST:

  • Have completed a state-mandated 40-hour unarmed Security Officer training program, OR
  • Be scheduled to complete a state-mandated 40-hour unarmed Security Officer training program, OR
  • Possess a valid FL Class “D” Security Officer License, OR
  • Possess a valid FL Class “CC” Private Investigator Intern License, OR
  • Possess a valid FL Class “C” Private Investigator License.

Additionally, the State of Florida requires applicants for firearms licenses must be at least 21 years of age, have no disqualifying criminal history, and be legally allowed to work in the United States.
