Florida Concealed Carry Guide

If you have decided to join the growing ranks of Florida CWP permit holders, The ESS Global Florida Concealed Carry Guide will help you stay on the right track.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide

If you’re one of the thousands of people here in the Tampa area, who have decided to take your self-protection seriously and apply for a concealed carry permit, congratulations! The ranks of people who have decided to stop being a victim and become their own first responder are growing every day. Carrying a concealed weapon is an empowering act that signifies you are taking charge of your personal safety and the safety of your family and loved ones.

We are sure that many firearm holders have plenty of experience on the range with a pistol, before deciding to carry.

But, for many people, a concealed carry training class is their first step into the world of firearms training, and as such, they arrive at the class with no understanding of what lies ahead and how they should prepare for a concealed carry class.

The ESS Global Florida Concealed Carry Guide

Rule #1

A concealed carry class is a permitting class, not a training class.

As such, you will leave the training facing the realities of carrying, with a clear idea of the Florida firearm laws. It’s similar to a driving test, which doesn’t really prepare you for a daily commute on I-275.

So for this Florida Concealed Carry Guide, we have to hammer this home. Take a basic pistol course. Practice drawing, aiming and firing! Find a range and use it. Get comfortable with your firearm.

Deciding to Carry

No Florida Concealed Carry Guide would be complete, without pointing out some important things to consider. The decision to carry a firearm brings about a whole new set of circumstances. There are many more factors to consider, than simply owning a firearm for home protection or to keep in your vehicle.

Before you decide to concealed carry, ask yourself;

Will I carry a firearm every day, as often as I can?
Will I have enough time set aside to practice at the range?
Am I prepared to act if threatened with harm?

If you answered “no” to any of those questions, you may need to reconsider spending the time, energy and cash, to apply for a concealed carry permit.

Applying for a Concealed Carry Permit in Florida

Most states, including Florida, require a permit or license to carry a weapon in a concealed manner. Every state that requires a license also requires some form of training before sending in the paperwork.

And Florida is no exception. See the qualifications to carry in Florida.

You’ll notice that one reason you can be denied is “Failing to provide proof of proficiency with a firearm” which refers to the training class, where you will get the paperwork that tells the state you passed your ~~driver’s test~~ CWP exam at the end of the concealed carry course.

A good class will address all the issues associated with the permit application process, so it all goes smoothly, and you get your concealed carry weapon permit.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide Side Note:

What is the difference between all of these…

CCW
CWP
CCP
Concealed Weapons Permit
Concealed Weapons License
Concealed Carry Permit
Concealed Carry License

Nothing.

All of these names refer to the very same thing. A license to carry a concealed weapon.

Florida Conceal Carry Guide – Choosing a Weapon

Here, you should talk with friends that carry. Go with them to the range and hold and fire their gun. Not everyone has the luxury of trying out a firearm before purchasing it so, if you can take advantage of that, do it. Go to the store and hold them. Does it feel right? If you are going to be carrying, you need a correctly sized firearm! Get one too “bulky” and you may quickly find to you no longer carry, defeating the purpose of obtaining a concealed carry permit.

Find one that is right for yourself and your hands/ body. Did we mention you must practice with it? Believe us, the first time you pull it out to defend yourself is no time to be unfamiliar with your weapon. Practice, practice and practice some more.

Choosing a weapon is a big task. Not only is ESS Global the premier security and protection firm in Florida, we are also an FFL dealer. We can assist you with acquiring your weapon of choice.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide – Get a Good Holster

Do some research. Holsters vary greatly in size, shape, materials and quality. If it’s not comfortable to carry, it’s not right. Make adjustments to your setup until it’s comfortable for everyday use.

A quality holster is not something you want to shortchange yourself on. A holster is more than just something to hold the firearm in place, and it can make the difference between safe and responsible carry, and unsafe carry.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide – Choosing A Concealed Carry Training

The first factor to consider. Does the instructor or facilitating organization hold any current certifications as a firearms instructor such as: NRA Certification, D.O.E. certification, or other certifications.

Second, what experience does this instructor have in teaching firearms courses? For example, has the instructor taught firearms courses to armed security guards, law enforcement or military? Or is this their first batch of classes held in a firearms store, solely designed to get you in to buy more firearms?

Third, will you have easy access to their courses? Will this instructor or organization offer other courses to increase your skill sets after completing the concealed carry tra
ining? Remember, concealed carry training is only the start of your training if you are serious about protecting yourself and loved ones.

Choose your training wisely. ESS Global Corp is the only protection organization in the state of Florida that is D.O.E. licensed. We have NRA instructors. If you are in the Tampa/ Clearwater area, ESS wins hands down, offering much more information than most any other classes.

Carrying

So you’ve gotten your permit and can now concealed carry.

Two things are likely to happen.

Printing

Down here in Florida, we don’t wear bulky clothing for half the year (or more) like up north. You need to be aware of “printing”. This is when your firearm ‘prints’ on your clothing creating a visible outline when bending over, or reaching for something or simply shows all the time because your shirt is too tight.

Look in the mirror, play around with your set-up until you are happy and confidant.

Situational Awareness

Also, once you begin to carry, it’s human nature for you to become more aware of your surroundings. At first, you may be wondering if people around you know you are carrying. Now you may even be looking at people wondering if they are carrying. You are now a bit more aware of your surroundings. If you would like to take this a higher practical level, consider taking the ESS Global Situational Awareness Training.

Florida Concealed Weapon Guide – Practice Makes Perfect

This cannot be stressed enough. Practicing with your firearm is one of the most important things that you can do.

Find a range and be there on a regular basis to practice with your carry firearm.
Practice shooting with the same ammunition you carry. Different ammunition behaves differently. If you know what to expect, there will be no surprises should you need to use your firearm in a stressful situation.
Practice drawing your unloaded firearm from your holster. If you are ever in a situation where you need to get it quickly, this is where memory will come into play. In a stressful situation, you need to be alert and able to draw with as much consistency as if you were practicing with an unloaded weapon in your home.
Lastly, it is highly recommended that everyone who chooses to carry a firearm receive at least some basic handgun training. Going to the range and shooting is great practice, but a good instructor in a controlled environment can greatly boost your confidence, as well as highlight limitations you may not have even considered before.

A Final Note

A Florida Concealed Carry Guide would be incomplete without mentioning the 5 rules.

And these five rules need to be memorized.

Five Basic Handgun Safety Rules

Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction (down is great).
Treat ALL firearms as if they were loaded.
Keep your trigger finger outside the trigger guard and off of the trigger until you are ready to fire.
Be certain of your target, your line of fire, and what lies beyond your target.
Always wear appropriate eye and ear protection when shooting and maintaining your firearm.

Pokemon Go Robberies, Muggings and Mayhem

About a fortnight ago, the Pokemon Go App hit and now the reports are coming in. Pokemon Go robberies, muggings and mayhem have hit the nation hard.

Pokemon Go Robberies, Muggings and Mayhem

So you downloaded the #1 app, you have traveled across your town, searching far and wide for Pikachu. But that hasn’t exactly worked out for all the Pokémon Go users. After luring victims to their location with the new augmented reality game app, suspects have been arrested or are currently being sought as police have responded to a high number of reports of Pokemon Go robberies, mugging and general mayhem that have erupted across the nation.
First a little background. The Pokemon Go app allows you, for a small fee of $5 for 30 minutes, to become a “PokeStop”. This brings game players to your location. That’s fine if you are a coffee shop or ice cream parlor wanting to drive traffic to your store.
It’s not fine when someone is luring you to a secluded location to rob you.
Police around the nation are warning those who play the game or have children who play the game to do so with extreme caution.
Why?
In just two short weeks, it’s happening all over. From Orlando Florida to St Louis to stabbing and robbing in San Antonio to a carjacking in a Northern California park to the University of Maryland Campus to a gunpoint robberies at a park in Baltimore to a man shot and robbed in Columbus Ohio. And that’s not even a start of a list, that’s just the first page of a Google News search.

What do they all have in common? Their head was down, they were playing a game and distracted, unaware of their surroundings.

If any of those folks had Situational Awareness Training, they would likely have their phones, wallets and purses right now. It’s also fairly certain they would not have been stabbed, shot or had their vehicle stolen either.
It also poses a question we never thought of.
Should you get a concealed weapon permit to play a game on your phone? We sincerely hope the answer is no, and that you have the common sense to be aware of your surroundings when playing a game.
But the larger question is that with street and parking lot robberies, carjackings and home invasions on the rise; Are you prepared to protect yourself and your loved ones?
When you say the word “robberies” most people imagine crimes committed against banks (how many bank heists have we seen in movies and TV?), but that is only 2.1% of robberies. Or perhaps you think of late-night retail establishments like gas stations and convenience stores where a gun is used to force the cashier to hand over the cash in the drawer (8.3%). However, most robberies occur on the street and parking lots, directly against a person (44.5%). When someone uses force or fear against you to steal your car, it’s a carjacking (10.2%). When someone robs you in your home (14.3%) it’s a home invasion robbery.
We tell you this so that you know that a bank teller or cashier at 7-11 working the graveyard shift at 3 AM is considerably safer than you are walking to your car at the mall at 3 in the afternoon, or sitting in your home watching Jeopardy.

But definitely keep and eye out playing Pokemon Go.

Executive Protection Certifications

While there are no authentic Executive Protection certifications, there are valid Secondary Executive Protection Certifications that you’ll need to have.

Executive Protection Certifications

If you are considering a career in the rapidly growing executive protection field, know that in the protection/security industry, there is no “license”, there is no state testing, and their are no state boards in most states. Consequently, in nearly every state, there are no Executive Protection Certifications. Executive Protection Training is usually lumped into the same category as Security Guards or Private Investigation and has very little to do with either.
Yet online, we see training to earn your “certified protection specialist credentials” advertised on various websites. Unfortunately, nobody is regulating these schools, training centers and trainers. So know this; No government agency regulates or monitors what is taught and who is teaching it. Thus, anybody off the street could be teaching you, and you could be paying for false, misleading, inaccurate information.
The “protection credentials” you are handed at the end of the training, is simply a piece of paper from the trainer and nothing more.

How ESS Global is Different

This is exactly where the ESS Global Executive Protection Training School differs. We are licensed and our curriculum and instructors are all regulated and monitored by the Department of Education (D.O.E.), and only a select few elite schools are D.O.E. approved and certified for executive protection training.

But there are important Secondary Executive Protection Certifications that can further your career in the security/protection field.

Secondary Executive Protection Certifications

ASP Tactical Baton Certification

The ASP Basic Certification (ABC) is a 7-hour, hands-on seminar which trains participants in the operational use of the ASP Tactical Baton. The program is simple to learn and easy to understand. It provides effective defensive impact weapon tactics for law enforcement and private security personnel, as well as responsible civilians without long hours of training. The techniques were designed to work effectively for all users, male and female, large and small, fit as well as those in less-than-peak physical condition.
The program provides portation (carrying) and presentation (drawing) procedures as well as striking techniques. These tactics are quickly learned, easily practiced and readily maintained long after the program is completed.

ASP Tactical Handcuff Certification

handcuff training at ESS Global The ASP Basic Handcuff Certification (ABC) is a 4-hour, hands-on seminar which trains participants in the operational use of the hinged and chain handcuffs, as well as the proprietary ASP flex-cuffs. The program is simple to learn and easy to understand. It provides effective mechanical restraint tactics for law enforcement and private security personnel without long hours of training. The techniques were designed to work effectively for all users, male and female, large and small, fit as well as those in less-than-peak physical condition.
The program provides portation (carrying) and presentation (drawing) procedures as well as application techniques. These tactics are quickly learned, easily practiced and readily maintained long after the program is completed.

OC Aerosol Projector (OCAP) Mace Certification

This four (4) hour end-user level certification program focuses on the deployment, handling and documentation of the use of OC (oleoresin capsicum) chemical aerosols.
This course will train the police officer or private security officer in the use of aerosols tactics and will help protect both the officer as well as their agency from costly litigation issues that could arise from the use of OC aerosol projectors.
This program addresses proper deployment techniques, situational requirements and situational appropriateness of various projectors, defensive and retention contamination drills, decontamination, proper use-of-force reporting and operational guidelines.
Pepper spray can save your life — but it can also make a dangerous encounter worse.
PREREQUISITES: This class is restricted to sworn public law enforcement officers and licensed private security officers only.

Concealed Carry Permit

There is a saying we love around the office here;

Brandishing a firearm is not the solution to every confrontation, but rather taking action first will always beat reacting last.

That being said, there are times you may need to carry. So you will need a Concealed Carry Permit. In most every state including here in Florida where our corporate office is, you’ll need to take a concealed weapons class in order to successfully apply for your permit to carry a weapon.

These Executive Protection Certifications training classes are an absolute must for those that are serious about success in the Executive Protection/Bodyguard/Security Guard Industry.

Please ask us about our group rates, private classes, referrals and discounts for: military, law enforcement, firemen, EMT/paramedics and security officers with either D or G license.

Another Benefit of Tampa Concealed Weapon Training

Florida law usually allows the weapon or firearm to be legally kept ‘securely encased” in a vehicle, although there are some exceptions. The simplest and most common definition of “securely encased” means it is in a holster or gun rug that is snapped, zipped, or strapped, or in a box or container with a closed lid or top so that the lid or top must be physically opened in order to use or fire the weapon. Securely encased would also allow the firearm or weapon to be placed inside a closed glove compartment or closed console of a vehicle. The firearm may be fully loaded at the time.
benefits of tampa concealed weapon training It’s very common for firearm owners to carry a weapon in their vehicle for protection while on the roadways and getting around town. If you are pulled over by a police officer and they may ask if you have a firearm in your car. Answer truthfully. The presence of a firearm can affect the traffic stop because the officer is unaware of your criminal history. Showing the officer a concealed carry permit shows that you have undergone the necessary background checks, and that the state reasonably believes that you are a law-abiding citizen and are trustworthy enough to carry a firearm. If you are pulled over with a gun in the car (glove-box, console, truck, etc.) and have a concealed license, giving the officer both your driver’s license and your concealed carry license together, immediately quells any concern the officer may have over your firearm.
Plus, it allow you to concealed carry it on your person while in a vehicle.
