Church Security Training Nationwide

Posted on

ESS Global Corp is the leader in Church Security Training nationwide. We have trained thousands of churches in over 50 countries, with congregations as small as 15 and large as thousands.
“Size doesn’t matter”, says Theo Billiris, CEO of ESS Global. “I cannot adequately express the importance of intentional security and safety by every ministry – regardless of size.”
Since no federal agency or law enforcement group keeps track of violence and killings at houses of worship, people recording cases on their own believe that there has been a disturbing uptick in recent years. Randy McAlister, a police sergeant in Minnesota doing church violence research at Concordia University, also thinks church violence is increasing and likens it to school shootings a decade ago. Church violence is on its way to becoming a persistent phenomenon.

ESS Global Corp offers faith based church security training nationwide, as well as globally.

Common Reasons for Church Violence

There are many reasons for violence in churches. Any of the common reasons for violent eruptions on church property demonstrate a need for church security training.
Police cars at a place of worship are becoming all too common Church Security Training - ESS Global Corp
Robbery leads the list at 24% of all violent actions on church property.  Anyone of any age knows that Sunday is Money Day.
“Domestic Spillover” is the second leading cause of violence. This is when domestic relations violence finds its way into a ministry.  One reason might be that in an increasingly high-alert world, churches remain an easy “soft” target. In cases of domestic violence spillover, perpetrators know that once a week, their victim will show up at a specific time, perhaps even parking in a certain spot or sitting in a certain section.
“Personal Conflict” between two or more non-domestic-related parties represents of 13% of church violence.
It’s important to note that for 2 of the top 3 types of incidents perpetrators most likely have visited that church many times, and they might have thought twice had they seen pervasive “situational awareness”.  In other words, the act of receiving faith based church security training has the very real potential to prevent violence from even occurring. It turns a soft target to a harder target.
Obviously with acts such as robberies, drug related acts of violence (2%), gang related acts (11%) or those with confirmed mental health issues (10%) it makes even more sense to have a trained church staff, especially during services and special events.
“For you to come to us provides little value as it relates to your facility”, says Theo Billiris. “That’s why we come to you, so we can customize the training for your environment.”

Situational AwarenessFaith Based Church Security Training

It’s important that everyone; pastors, staff and assistants, all learn faith based techniques and protocols to increase situational awareness. Mr. Billiris states that “Great security firms aren’t necessarily the best choice in a church environment. In ESS faith based church security trainings we know that discernment in the Bible is a gift from God. Discerning good from evil provides a foundation for faith based security training that increases situational awareness.”

Church Security and Threat Analysis

ESS Global Corp, based out of Tampa, offers a Church Security and Threat Analysis, Faith-Based Church Security Training, and Church Security Guards when warranted.

Church Security and Threat Analysis

Just last month, on August 4, a man attempted to rob a Melbourne, Florida church during a sermon by holding a gun to the head of a 72 year old woman worshiper. He was subdued and was arrested and booked into jail.  It ended with no deaths or injuries, just a visibly shaken congregation. That is a success. But sadly, it doesn’t always end this way.
Last summer, a JD Gallop poll found that “The number of deadly episodes at sanctuaries has soared over the last decade, and mass shootings at schools, malls and movie theaters have left Americans feeling like it could happen anywhere.” That statement foretold the horrific shootings at a North Charleston Church earlier this year.
In 1999, there were 22 violent deaths reported at worship centers nationwide.  In 2013, there were 115 attacks, with 75 of those ending in a fatality. Incidents of violence in churches is rising as churches are considered one of the few soft targets left, but there are ways to be prepared.

The purpose of a church security analysis and training is to raise church security awareness to help plan for and reduce risks and threats and increase security and safety for everyone.

Security Guard Services in Florida – ESS Global Corp

Having a comfortable feeling of security is something that every person is entitled to. While sometimes it’s easier to guarantee security at home, a person still needs to feel safe no matter where he or she is when out of the house. Whether it’s going for a stroll some evening in one’s neighborhood or attending church. It could be attending a high school football game, or a concert venue to hear your favorite artist. People shouldn’t have to worry about their safety and security. In these types of environments, personal security can be greatly enhanced by the presence of a professional security service.
Neighborhood and HOA Security PatrolsHOA Neighborhood Security - ESS Global Corp
Going for a walk after dinner is something that many people like to do. However, some people are afraid to undertake this walk activity after certain hours due to the fact that they’re worried about how secure their neighborhoods are. When that happens, a personal sense of security is diminished or even completely lost. If, however, these same neighborhoods, HOA’s and apartment complexes are monitored by our highly trained professional neighborhood security guard service, this can give residents the peace of mind that they need in order to feel comfortable going out at any time of the day or night. It’s a small investment for both safety and protection of property.
Workplace Security
Being productive at work depends on a number of different factors, but one important factor is feeling a sense of security and safety. Employers can do a great number of things to increase this sense of safety, such as issue ID cards and perform comprehensive background checks. However, many employers don’t understand that they can ensure that employees are safe in other ways, for instance, when they are traveling to their vehicles from the office building, or when an employee is terminated (or keeping that employee from coming back for trouble).  When relying on a professional security services they can ensure that employees feel completely secure when they are entering, working, and exiting their office buildings with an affordable investment.
Churches and Non-Profits

Church Violence Rising – ESS Global Corp

While once rare, acts of violence at churches are increasing by double digits every year. One only needs to go to Google news and search for “Church Violence”. Sadly, it happens every day.
For instance, last week, on 07/26/15, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office arrested Song Su Kim, age 30 of Falls Church Virginia, on charges of first degree murder, second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and two counts of first-degree assault.
Church Violence At approximately 7:45 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the Anna Prayer Mountain Church, located on Peters Rd, for a report of multiple stabbings. Through the investigation it was determine Kim stabbed a male, age 62, and female age 57, during a church service. The male victim died.
The first Sunday in August brought not one, but two bombings of churches (Baptist and Catholic) in Arizona. Thankfully, there were no deaths or serious injuries, though there was property damage.
Violent acts may include robbery, assault, rape, attempted murder and murder. Nearly 500 people have been killed on church property in the last 15 years. Many more have been seriously injured.
The majority of violent acts are carried out by people who have some connection to the congregation. The most common violent act at churches, is a shooting. Often there are precursors or warning signs to the violent act, such as threats or previous outbursts, disputes, or confrontations. Other times the violence comes out of the blue with no warning at all.
Most churches are unprepared for a violent event or how to handle the immediate aftermath. These are the churches that have the greatest risk and as such, have the most to gain from a church security analysis from the church security experts at ESS Global Corp.
Who is at Risk?
No church is immune to the risk of a violent episode occurring. Larger churches have the greatest risk since as the numbers rise, so does the risk. Churches and places of worship of all religions, sizes, and locations have experienced acts of violence.
There is no assurance that a violent episode in church can be avoided.  However, you can be prepared for the possibility of an incident occurring with the addition of qualified, professional security personnel. ESS Global Corp also offers church security training. On August 3, 2015, ESS Global Corp received a letter from Brandon White, Executive Pastor at Without Walls International Church in Tampa.
Pastor White summed up both the need and the completeness of our services.
“As a large church in the Tampa Bay community, the safety and security of the attending congregation is held in the highest regards, which should never be marginalized as a second thought. By taking responsibility for the safety of your church with “faith based” security, you will have done the best thing possible to prevent a violent incident from occurring.

Florida Church Security Tampa, Orlando and More

We are saddened by recent church violence events and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased.
Over 420 people have died in incidents involving deadly force at churches and other faith organizations in America since 1999, as detailed by noted church security expert Carl Chinn and reported in a 2013 issue of SBC LIFE, the journal of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee. If you’ve followed the news the past two years, you know that number has risen dramatically.
The biggest trigger in church violence over the last 16 years is “Domestic Spillover”. This is when domestic relationship violence finds it’s way onto ministry property resulting in a deadly force incident. The second most common reason for church violence is “Random Acts” which describes the tragedy in Charleston, SC.
The SBC Life article recommended ways churches can protect themselves against violent intruders.

  • Perform a professional security analysis for activities throughout the week and at services.
  • Assess unmonitored entryways to the church on Sundays or during other activities including day care, Bible studies, and more where someone could enter and hide.
  • Consider hiring a security firm to provide armed security during all church events.

Carl Chinn also stated recently, “If you still have time to be on the security team after making sure your own house is in order, then you can look around your church to see if any friends or relatives of ‘Bozo Thug’ are around you. There are plenty of them in our society. Empty-eyed mindless little rats looking for an opportunity to get their name in the paper.”
Faith-based organizations must increase their awareness of, and preparation for, criminal hazards capable of compromising their primary ministry purpose.
