Security Guard Liability – The Best Protection is Knowledge

ESS Global Corp provides Florida State required “G” armed security guard training, and is the only state licensed protection and security school in Florida. Let’s take a quick look at security guard liability.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, under the direction of Adam Putman (pictured) per the Division of Licensing, licenses and regulates the private security industry in accordance with Chapter 493, of the Florida Statutes. Armed and unarmed security officers and security agencies serve both businesses and the public sector. Untrained and unlicensed persons or businesses, or persons not of strong moral character can be a threat to public safety. The private security industry is state regulated to ensure the interests of the public are adequately and properly served and protected.

To begin the licensing process for the Armed Security Guard Certification, you must first successfully completed the unarmed “D” course. Then you must take the state mandated 28 hours of armed security training in the classroom and at the gun range. The Florida armed security guard certification training is obtained by completing 20 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of firearm instruction on the range. The firearm portion of the class is meant to provide basic firearm usage and safety and to meet the armed security training requirements of the state-regulated shooting sequences to show proficiency and safety with a firearm.
Don’t forget that the State of Florida requires that all Florida License “G” Armed Security Officers must re-qualify at least once per year with the type of handgun that they carry on duty.

Security Guard Liability Issues

While not all security situations require armed officers, they are a useful addition in many cases. If there is a need for armed professionals, there must be much more training and evaluation of the individual before they ever carry a weapon. It’s important to remember there is liability of having an armed guard, but in many instances there is also liability by not having an armed professional.
Also, like everything else, the statutes change frequently, sometimes they are big changes (see the new firearms allowed HERE), and sometimes little changes (uniform requirements). You can read the current Florida statutes HERE. This is important. As a rule, the bigger security agencies generally know the changes before the smaller companies. These statues also matter in cases such as vicarious litigation. Security guards, bouncers, and venue protection are, in most cases, considered employees of the venues and businesses they are charged with protecting when it comes to security guard liability issues.
So yes, it’s kind of important that you talk about these issues with your current security company. If you’re not comfortable with the answers you get, give ESS a call.

5 Back to School Safety Tips – ESS Global Corp

It’s late August and that means children are headed back to school, or maybe going to class for the first time. ESS Global would like to remind all parents to make sure your children are as safe as possible. Here are 5 back to school safety tips to make the trips back and forth to school as safe as possible.

  • Know the Numbers – Children should know their phone number, address, how to dial 9-1-1 and how to reach their parents at work. Another way to help them remember is to use a small business card to list all emergency information such as phone numbers and addresses and attach it to the inside your child’s backpack.
  • Walk the School Route – walk along with your children before the first day of school to make sure it is safe and your child knows the route. Encourage your kids to avoid short cuts unless they have been pre-approved. Same goes for the bus stop unless it’s right outside your front door.
  • Be Observant – Tell your children to stay observant and aware of their surroundings as they walk. If they think they are being followed, they should immediately go to a trusted adult and tell them. Make sure your children know who is a trusted adult: law enforcement, store owners, or a teacher, to name a few.
  • Stranger Danger – Make sure your child knows what to do if they think they are in danger – they should yell “help” or “you are not my mom/dad” and run to the nearest business or back to school. Tell your child, if a stranger asks questions, they should not get close to the car. Make sure they know to never get in a car with a stranger – anyone the kids and parents don’t know or know very well.
  • Some are Tricky – Make sure your child knows they should never go near any adult they don’t personally know who asks for assistance. Some “bad” adults might ask for help or even claim they are looking for a lost puppy, or kitten.

Lastly, make sure your children know that if they feel threatened or suspicions at all, it’s OK to scream. Tell your child that if they are ever in a situation that makes them uncomfortable, they have the right to say no, loud and clear.

Social Media and Home Break-Ins

Don’t believe that social media and home break-ins are related?

Social Media and Home Break-Ins

Google “home break-ins from Facebook posts” and you’ll get about 11 million returns. TV reports, newspaper reports, personal blogs…it’s a long list. Because it happens all too frequently.
When you are ‘friends’ with people on Facebook that you are not actually really friends with, how do you know whether they have good intentions?
The problem lies in that if Tom posts that he is so excited to take the family to Disney World next week. Sally likes the post. I don’t know Tom. I’ve never met Tom. I’m not friends with Tom, but I know Sally from high school and we’ve been friends on Facebook for years. I see Tom’s post in my news feed because Sally liked it or commented on it. Now, I might know some of Tom’s things I can sell after I fill the back of my car late some night next week.
Or, you have great photos of your house with house numbers (hello Google maps), the yard, and the car in the driveway. Maybe you shouldn’t really be checking in from the concert you’re at or the bar across town.
burglar-157142_1280A recent segment on CNN discusses the risks that you may be taking while updating your Facebook status. You don’t know who is looking at your private information because it’s truly not private – it’s public. They told a story about a woman who found this out the hard way after she posted a simple status message on Facebook that she was going to see a band with her fiancé. It only took the burglars calling the venue to find out what time the show was to let them know when they could break into her home. The burglars showed up 35 minutes after she left for the concert.
It is that simple. You post a casual message to your “friends” that could turn into a nightmare where you lose personal property. Worse, what if there was a child there with a baby sitter? What if….
There is a very strong connection between social media and home break-ins.
Google it and you’ll see, there are horror stories in every community.  No matter what privacy setting you have on your Facebook profile, your posts are public, permanent and exploitable. They are seen by more than “your friends”.
