Executive Protection and Business Protocol

Recently we mentioned how intertwined executive protection and business protocol/ etiquette are. Today we look at a specific example that is all too common.

Executive Protection and Business Protocol

One of the important aspects of executive protection is how improper business protocol and etiquette can impact an executive protection assignment. And we bring this up because it all comes back to training. A training that leaves out proper business protocol puts you in jeopardy.

How Executive Protection and Business Protocol clashed on assignment.

Executive Protection and Business Protocol - how case gets unraveledWe were out on an assignment where there were executive protection agents from more than one agency, and are on a private jet somewhere over Europe on the way back to California. And the client we were charged with protecting is pacing around the cabin looking for a magazine. Looking behind the bar, moving the snacks. “Where is my magazine?”
Real life: You get on a commercial flight and there are public magazines for anyone to look at.
Executive Protection: This is not the case and you never help yourself to ANY client belongings.
By now, you can guess who had been reading the magazine. The client spots the magazine rolled up and stuffed between the airplane seats where the executive protection agent (from another agency) is sitting. And he never said a single word.
This agent, who lives in California, was kicked off the plane at a stop in Spain.
Fired. (and it’s likely it was a long trip back to the states for a good agent, left untrained in executive protection and business protocol.)
Executive Protection Training - A Guide to EPAnd for good reason. You don’t touch client belongings.
It’s the little things like this that trips up executive protection agents in the real world. Even if you have been protecting the same client for 20 years, they are a client, not a friend, and you do not break protocol.
Ever.

This should have been covered in training.

We touch on business etiquette in our basic training and cover it fully in our “all-in-one” training.

How to Get Started in Executive Protection

You’ve thought about, looked into it, and said to yourself “I can do that.” How to Get Started in Executive Protection – EP Training in Tampa.

How to Get Started in Executive Protection

If you’ve wondered how to get started in Executive Protection, here is a short guide to help you get started.

Are You Prepared?

You genuinely need to determine if you are ready, both physically and psychologically, before you begin your search for an Executive Protection Training School.
Additionally, ask yourself these questions:

  • how to get started in Executive ProtectionAm I willing to take another human being’s life to save my own or the life of another?
  • Am I capable of defending another, or myself and then render first aid and/or CPR to the very person I just injured?
  • Am I ready to face the consequences of my actions and defend those actions in a court of law?
  • What about the effects of my actions on my family and my friends, how will the public view my actions?

Ready to learn how to get started in Executive Protection?

Choose the Trainers Wisely

When choosing a training school the big variables are;

  • Who is training you?
  • The distance from you
  • The length of the training

Who is Training You?

Are they currently active in EP? Or are they describing what it was like 5, 10, 20 even 30 years ago? This is tremendously important. You will want to be trained by a company and more importantly, trainers that are currently active in executive protection projects. The ESS Global trainers have current EP experience in over 50 countries.
Another possible issue is what are they teaching you? In other words, who wrote the curriculum and who has reviewed it for accuracy and relevancy?
how to get started in executive protection - choose wiselyIn the world of Executive Protection training, we often find a curriculum that is simply cribbed from who they learned from (and how long ago was that?).
At ESS Global, we write the curriculum directly from our experience in the field. And it is fresh every year. And the D.O.E. comes in and reviews both the trainers and the curriculum. Every year. It’s a huge project, but we do it to protect you. All the information you are presented with in the ESS Executive Protection training class has been reviewed and approved by the Department of Education.
And we are the only security company in the state of Florida that is D.O.E. certified. The ONLY one.
Updated 12-15-16 2017 Calendar is up – Also ESS Global Corp is now approved by the VA to accept GI Bill Benefits.

The Distance from You

Most of our security training classes are held at our corporate headquarters north of Tampa/Clearwater in Tarpon Springs Florida. At various times, we do have executive protection training in other cities such as Orlando, Raleigh, Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and more as needed. But why wait? It’s 3 days. Which bring us to…

The Length of the Training

How long is the training? The reason that this is important is that the length of the training has no bearing whatsoever on the quality.
How to get started in Executive Protection - The basicsWhat we find at ESS is that the best approach to Executive Protection Training is to cut “the fluff” and hammer on the basics. In other words, give you the tools to build a solid foundation in Executive Protection, without wasting your time learning “the fluff” used to extend training in order to justify a higher training price.
Case and point. One basic EP training we saw includes “how to perform your operations with a gas mask on”. Really? In a basic training? We can think of about a few thousand more important things you need to be trained on in an executive protection training, and it’s a perfect example of the “fluff” found  in the world of EP training.
Lastly, out in the real world, where most executive protection training will fail you is in “customer service” skills. Yes, we teach the tactical stuff. We’d like to think we do that better than anyone. But we also train on real world client issues. Our executive protection clients don’t check in at hotels. They don’t wait in lines. They don’t wait for restaurant service because the menu was in the car and the food was ready at arrival.
We teach the customer service issues in the real world that most every executive protection training never mentions, much less teaches you.

Because it’s the basics.

And in the real world of executive protection, it’s almost a certainty, that you will lose a client because of basic customer service issues, as opposed to protection/tactical issues.

Pokemon Go Robberies, Muggings and Mayhem

About a fortnight ago, the Pokemon Go App hit and now the reports are coming in. Pokemon Go robberies, muggings and mayhem have hit the nation hard.

Pokemon Go Robberies, Muggings and Mayhem

pokemon go robberiesSo you downloaded the #1 app, you have traveled across your town, searching far and wide for Pikachu. But that hasn’t exactly worked out for all the Pokémon Go users. After luring victims to their location with the new augmented reality game app, suspects have been arrested or are currently being sought as police have responded to a high number of reports of Pokemon Go robberies, mugging and general mayhem that have erupted across the nation.
First a little background. The Pokemon Go app allows you, for a small fee of $5 for 30 minutes, to become a “PokeStop”. This brings game players to your location. That’s fine if you are a coffee shop or ice cream parlor wanting to drive traffic to your store.
pokemon go robberies (2)It’s not fine when someone is luring you to a secluded location to rob you.
Police around the nation are warning those who play the game or have children who play the game to do so with extreme caution.
Why?
In just two short weeks, it’s happening all over. From Orlando Florida to St Louis to stabbing and robbing in San Antonio to a carjacking in a Northern California park to the University of Maryland Campus to a gunpoint robberies at a park in Baltimore to a man shot and robbed in Columbus Ohio. And that’s not even a start of a list, that’s just the first page of a Google News search.

What do they all have in common? Their head was down, they were playing a game and distracted, unaware of their surroundings.

If any of those folks had Situational Awareness Training, they would likely have their phones, wallets and purses right now. It’s also fairly certain they would not have been stabbed, shot or had their vehicle stolen either.
It also poses a question we never thought of.
Should you get a concealed weapon permit to play a game on your phone? We sincerely hope the answer is no, and that you have the common sense to be aware of your surroundings when playing a game.
But the larger question is that with street and parking lot robberies, carjackings and home invasions on the rise; Are you prepared to protect yourself and your loved ones?
When you say the word “robberies” most people imagine crimes committed against banks (how many bank heists have we seen in movies and TV?), but that is only 2.1% of robberies. Or perhaps you think of late-night retail establishments like gas stations and convenience stores where a gun is used to force the cashier to hand over the cash in the drawer (8.3%). However, most robberies occur on the street and parking lots, directly against a person (44.5%). When someone uses force or fear against you to steal your car, it’s a carjacking (10.2%). When someone robs you in your home (14.3%) it’s a home invasion robbery.
We tell you this so that you know that a bank teller or cashier at 7-11 working the graveyard shift at 3 AM is considerably safer than you are walking to your car at the mall at 3 in the afternoon, or sitting in your home watching Jeopardy.

But definitely keep and eye out playing Pokemon Go.

Executive Protection – Compromise vs Convenience

Executive Protection – Compromise vs Convenience – Executive protection is not only about protection. It is about the entire experience for our client.

Executive Protection – Compromise vs Convenience

BieberExecutive protection is not just about protection. It is in fact about the entire experience for our client. Now, while most of what we do is based upon security, some of it is simply based upon pleasing our client. We always teach in our courses here at ESS Global Corporation Executive Protection School, that you will always be balancing Compromise vs Convenience.
That is the compromise of security that we must allow to enable the convenience of the client. As Executive Protection agents, we are always security minded and want to keep security at a high level. Unfortunately, high levels of security are not always convenient for our clients. While we would like to keep them locked down under our supervision 24/7, they like to go outside, go shopping, go eat, etc. In order to do this, we have to drop the level of security a little bit to achieve this.
Now, this does not mean that we drop all security measures. It just means that we now have to be even more vigilant and aware than ever. Make sure you are always in YELLOW. Remember, we can never tell our clients NO. Well at least not in most cases. So, if they ask us to go somewhere, and we have advised them that it is dangerous to go there (like a nightclub), and yet they still wish to go, we must take them. And, if exactly what you warned them about happens, even though you advised them not to go there, guess who will be at fault. That’s right, YOU! We are always at fault.
Executive Protection - Compromise vs ConvenienceFor these reasons, it is extremely important to know your clients likes and dislikes so you can be prepared for moments like these and can perform a proper security advance to at least reduce the risk. While it still isn’t perfect, as most things are not in the Executive Protection industry, it will be safer. Knowing your clients likes and dislikes is first achieved through the client interview. unfortunately, this technique rarely used or even taught anymore .
Remember, in anything, to be successful you must master the basics.

Client profiling or client interviews are part of the basics in ESS Global Executive Protection.
