Once students complete the security class, a training certificate will be issued for successfully completing security guard training. Students will then submit this certificate along with the security license application to the Florida Division of Licensing in person or by mail. There is a difference between bodyguards and executive protection strategies.
Executive protection (EP), also known as close protection, refers to security measures taken to ensure the safety of VIPs. celebrities, executives or other individuals who may be exposed to elevated personal risk because of their employment, celebrity status, wealth, associations or geographical location.
Executive protection is its own highly specialized field within the private security industry, and was started by the US Secret Service back in the 1970’s while protecting foreign dignitaries.

What is Executive Protection and how important is it? Unfortunately, all it takes is a very bad event to answer that question. And that is primarily where executive protection varies from hiring a bodyguard. While having a bodyguard with an NFL physique open your limo door looks imposing, executive protection requires risk assessment, advance work and lot’s of legwork to insure all goes according to plan.

What is Executive Protection? Mitigating Risk

The assessment of risk probability for any VIP is affected by a number of details. While some truly are industry secrets, there are 3 probabilities we can discuss here, that a typical “bodyguard” would never be trained on.
Specific Threats
Specific threats to the principal and his/her family from “persons of interest” need to be perceived and analyzed to keep the principals safe now and in the future. It should be no surprise that those who pose the biggest threats are rarely those who end up making direct threats. This mean that assessing risk entails more than recording actual threats. It should also encompass proactive intelligence to identify both probable and possible threats from persons and groups of interest.

For some reason, crime, terrorism, kidnapping and traffic risks are perceived to be greater in certain cities or countries. A jeweler traveling to Caracas is perceived to be at greater risk than traveling to Chicago. Perhaps, but risk is everywhere. Prominence
The third key indicator of risk probability is prominence. The more well known the principal is, the more likely they are to be approached by “persons of interest”. These interactions can range from slight to enormous invasions of privacy. They can be largely innocuous, or incredibly hostile. For celebrities, it can be over zealous fans. For other industries, say politicians, oil executives, religious speakers and other polarizing individuals, the risk of threat is higher.

Executive Protection and Bodyguards are Night and Day

Most bodyguards wonder “What is Executive Protection?” Why? Most bodyguards have never heard such words as Threat Assessment, Advance Tactics, Route Reconnaissance, Embus and Debus plans, Area Surveillance, Movement Safety, etc. These guys usually show up on the day of an event/gig and depend on physical deterrence. The problem with that is, there is usually someone in the crowd that no matter how big you are, they will still try something foolish. Many times purposely, in an effort to get your hands on them and then collect a payday in the form of a lawsuit or out of court settlement/payoff.
In the protection industry, there is no “license”, no testing, and no boards in most states. Executive Protection is usually lumped into the same category as Security Guards or Private Investigation and has little to do with either. Yet we see training to earn your “certified protection specialist credentials” advertised online. Unfortunately, nobody is regulating these schools, training centers and trainers. Meaning, nobody regulates or monitors what is taught and who is teaching it. Anybody off the street could be teaching you false and/or misleading information and you are paying for it. So your “protection credentials” at the end of the day is a piece of paper from the trainer and nothing more.

Perhaps you have read about the recent child trafficking busts in Georgia and other US states including Ohio and Indiana. But what you should also know is Covid-19 is creating a situation where it’s almost twice as likely to lose a child to sex trafficking.  

First, the internet is a primary recruiting mechanism for child sex trafficking. Youths are spending more time on the internet due to the pandemic. Children who are already vulnerable are at increased risk of being groomed by traffickers on the internet. Additionally, the pandemic has highlighted these vulnerabilities — many families and children are stretched thin on needed resources and are left insecure. Child sex traffickers most commonly are adults who provide a promise to vulnerable children of relationship, love, or other means of support.
Secondly, Human traffickers prey on vulnerable children: runaway and homeless youth; those with low social supports; children who have been sexually or physically abused or are chemically dependent; or children who have a history in the foster care system or juvenile detention – even from “good homes”. It’s not just sex trafficking: Children are at greater risk of all forms of child abuse during the pandemic because of an increase in risk factors such as stress, financial difficulties, food insecurity and isolation. Social distancing has removed many children and adolescents from social supports including schools, summer programs, and community services, decreasing opportunities for mandatory reporters and concerned citizens to notice warning signs of child abuse and take appropriate reporting action.

Just last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, working with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, recovered 149 sexually exploited children and young adults and arrested more than 150 pimps and other individuals.
“Our mission is to protect the American people—especially our children—from harm,” said FBI Director James Comey in a statement. “When kids are treated as a commodity in seedy hotels and on dark roadsides, we must rescue them from their nightmare and severely punish those responsible for that horror. “We’ve had fake photographers offer modeling shoots down here in Florida”, says Theo Billiris, CEO of ESS Global Corp. “One happened very recently in Orlando who then kidnapped and raped two young women. A free modeling photo shoot is a big attraction, however all too often it ends up at a remote location such as a secluded area or a home or garage off the beaten path. And it’s not just happening here in Florida, as shown by the FBI operation it’s happening all across America.”

Here are some human trafficking ploys that are common for children and young adults.

  • Blind Dates – Katie picks out the girls her “boss” would like and targets the ones who will bring in the most cash for payment. She befriends unsuspecting girls until they trust her enough to go on a blind date that Katie then sets up for them. Unfortunately for Taylor, she is one of the girls that Katie becomes friends with. Katie then suggests to Taylor that she goes on a blind date with a “really good friend who is going to school to be a veterinarian.” They meet at night at a restaurant. He seems nice, walks her to her car and a van pulls up. Taylor never sees her friends and family again.
  • The “Too Good To Be True” Offer – Much like the “free photo shoot” (with the fake portfolio to boot), these are the “chance of a lifetime” offers that involve amazing job offers, travel to places you’ve only read about and opportunities you only dreamed about. Except you never come home.
  • Parties and “social events” – these are human trafficking ploys inevitably at locations you’ve never been to (with people you have recently met). The drinks are spiked, the world spins and you blackout. When you wake, it’s quite possible you are not even in the same state.

  • Social Media including Craigslist, Backpage, Tinder and other websites, smartphone apps, texting and chatting. Social media is cool. It’s also dangerous when it leads to off-line meetings in unfamiliar (and even familiar) surroundings. Don’t think for a minute that pimps, traffickers and other nefarious individuals and organizations don’t use social media. Think for a minute. ISIS is all over social channels. Be careful. Be very careful.
  • Boyfriend – Remember, you are dealing with professionals who target your vulnerabilities. Much like the blind date ploy, your new boyfriend knows what to do and what to say. No one ever told you how beautiful you are and John really seemed to mean it. John also knows that we all have emotional needs. He invites you to a concert out of town, and neither John nor you return.

The bottom line is it’s terrifying how people take advantage of children and young adults. It’s a myth that human trafficking only happens in poor, underdeveloped countries. It occurs with frightening regularity throughout the US. Be safe, not sorry. Let everyone know where you are going. Go places with a true friend or meet people with chaperone.

Florida D Security License TrainingThe attainment of a Class “D” statewide license issued by Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is the first step in becoming a security officer.  Once you have completed the state-mandated 40-hours of classroom training and taken and passed the exam the State of Florida will issue you a temporary license.  The temporary license will allow you to begin working immediately while waiting for your hard copy from the State.  The Class “D” license is for unarmed positions.   For an armed position, you must complete the requisite requirements to obtain a Class “G” license that entails 28 hours of state-mandated classes plus a 48-round firearms qualification course.

Note:  Anyone may take the class to obtain the Class “D” license.  However, F.S. 493.6109 outlines the guidelines that must be met in order to be eligible to obtain a “D” license.
The Florida Class D Security License Training requirements are as follows:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Must be a citizen or legal resident alien of the United States.
  • May not have been adjudicated incapacitated under s. 744.331 or a similar statute in another state.
  • May not have been involuntarily placed in a treatment facility for the mentally ill, unless judicially restored.
  • May not have been diagnosed with an incapacitating mental illness, unless cleared by a licensed psychiatrist.
  • May not be a chronic or habitual user of alcoholic beverages to the extent the individual’s normal faculties are impaired.
  • May not have been committed for controlled substance abuse
