Florida Concealed Carry Guide

If you have decided to join the growing ranks of Florida CWP permit holders, The ESS Global Florida Concealed Carry Guide will help you stay on the right track.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide

Florida Concealed Carry GuideIf you’re one of the thousands of people here in the Tampa area, who have decided to take your self-protection seriously and apply for a concealed carry permit, congratulations! The ranks of people who have decided to stop being a victim and become their own first responder are growing every day. Carrying a concealed weapon is an empowering act that signifies you are taking charge of your personal safety and the safety of your family and loved ones.

We are sure that many firearm holders have plenty of experience on the range with a pistol, before deciding to carry.

But, for many people, a concealed carry training class is their first step into the world of firearms training, and as such, they arrive at the class with no understanding of what lies ahead and how they should prepare for a concealed carry class.

The ESS Global Florida Concealed Carry Guide

Florida Concealed Carry Guide 1Rule #1

A concealed carry class is a permitting class, not a training class.

As such, you will leave the training facing the realities of carrying, with a clear idea of the Florida firearm laws. It’s similar to a driving test, which doesn’t really prepare you for a daily commute on I-275.

So for this Florida Concealed Carry Guide, we have to hammer this home. Take a basic pistol course. Practice drawing, aiming and firing! Find a range and use it. Get comfortable with your firearm.

Deciding to Carry

No Florida Concealed Carry Guide would be complete, without pointing out some important things to consider. The decision to carry a firearm brings about a whole new set of circumstances. There are many more factors to consider, than simply owning a firearm for home protection or to keep in your vehicle.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide 2Before you decide to concealed carry, ask yourself;

  • Will I carry a firearm every day, as often as I can?
  • Will I have enough time set aside to practice at the range?
  • Am I prepared to act if threatened with harm?

If you answered “no” to any of those questions, you may need to reconsider spending the time, energy and cash, to apply for a concealed carry permit.

Applying for a Concealed Carry Permit in Florida

Most states, including Florida, require a permit or license to carry a weapon in a concealed manner. Every state that requires a license also requires some form of training before sending in the paperwork.

And Florida is no exception. See the qualifications to carry in Florida.

You’ll notice that one reason you can be denied is “Failing to provide proof of proficiency with a firearm” which refers to the training class, where you will get the paperwork that tells the state you passed your driver’s test CWP exam at the end of the concealed carry course.

A good class will address all the issues associated with the permit application process, so it all goes smoothly, and you get your concealed carry weapon permit.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide Side Note:

Florida Concealed Carry Guide - Choosing a weaponWhat is the difference between all of these…

  • CCW
  • CWP
  • CCP
  • Concealed Weapons Permit
  • Concealed Weapons License
  • Concealed Carry Permit
  • Concealed Carry License

Nothing.

All of these names refer to the very same thing. A license to carry a concealed weapon.

Florida Conceal Carry Guide – Choosing a Weapon

Here, you should talk with friends that carry. Go with them to the range and hold and fire their gun. Not everyone has the luxury of trying out a firearm before purchasing it so, if you can take advantage of that, do it. Go to the store and hold them. Does it feel right? If you are going to be carrying, you need a correctly sized firearm! Get one too “bulky” and you may quickly find to you no longer carry, defeating the purpose of obtaining a concealed carry permit.

Find one that is right for yourself and your hands/ body. Did we mention you must practice with it? Believe us, the first time you pull it out to defend yourself is no time to be unfamiliar with your weapon. Practice, practice and practice some more.

Choosing a weapon is a big task. Not only is ESS Global the premier security and protection firm in Florida, we are also an FFL dealer. We can assist you with acquiring your weapon of choice.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide – Get a Good Holster

Florida Concealed Carry Guide - get a good holsterDo some research. Holsters vary greatly in size, shape, materials and quality. If it’s not comfortable to carry, it’s not right. Make adjustments to your setup until it’s comfortable for everyday use.

A quality holster is not something you want to shortchange yourself on. A holster is more than just something to hold the firearm in place, and it can make the difference between safe and responsible carry, and unsafe carry.

Florida Concealed Carry Guide – Choosing A Concealed Carry Training

NRA Basic Pistol Training in Tampa / ClearwaterThe first factor to consider. Does the instructor or facilitating organization hold any current certifications as a firearms instructor such as: NRA Certification, D.O.E. certification, or other certifications.

Second, what experience does this instructor have in teaching firearms courses? For example, has the instructor taught firearms courses to armed security guards, law enforcement or military? Or is this their first batch of classes held in a firearms store, solely designed to get you in to buy more firearms?

the only D.O.E Approved Security School in FloridaThird, will you have easy access to their courses? Will this instructor or organization offer other courses to increase your skill sets after completing the concealed carry tra
ining? Remember, concealed carry training is only the start of your training if you are serious about protecting yourself and loved ones.

Choose your training wisely. ESS Global Corp is the only protection organization in the state of Florida that is D.O.E. licensed. We have NRA instructors. If you are in the Tampa/ Clearwater area, ESS wins hands down, offering much more information than most any other classes.

Carrying

So you’ve gotten your permit and can now concealed carry.

Two things are likely to happen.

Printing

Down here in Florida, we don’t wear bulky clothing for half the year (or more) like up north. You need to be aware of “printing”. This is when your firearm ‘prints’ on your clothing creating a visible outline when bending over, or reaching for something or simply shows all the time because your shirt is too tight.

Look in the mirror, play around with your set-up until you are happy and confidant.

What is Situational Awareness TrainingSituational Awareness

Also, once you begin to carry, it’s human nature for you to become more aware of your surroundings. At first, you may be wondering if people around you know you are carrying. Now you may even be looking at people wondering if they are carrying. You are now a bit more aware of your surroundings. If you would like to take this a higher practical level, consider taking the ESS Global Situational Awareness Training.

Florida Concealed Weapon Guide – Practice Makes Perfect

This cannot be stressed enough. Practicing with your firearm is one of the most important things that you can do.

  • Find a range and be there on a regular basis to practice with your carry firearm.
  • Practice shooting with the same ammunition you carry. Different ammunition behaves differently. If you know what to expect, there will be no surprises should you need to use your firearm in a stressful situation.
  • Practice drawing your unloaded firearm from your holster. If you are ever in a situation where you need to get it quickly, this is where memory will come into play. In a stressful situation, you need to be alert and able to draw with as much consistency as if you were practicing with an unloaded weapon in your home.
  • Lastly, it is highly recommended that everyone who chooses to carry a firearm receive at least some basic handgun training. Going to the range and shooting is great practice, but a good instructor in a controlled environment can greatly boost your confidence, as well as highlight limitations you may not have even considered before.

A Final Note

A Florida Concealed Carry Guide would be incomplete without mentioning the 5 rules.

And these five rules need to be memorized.

Five Basic Handgun Safety Rules

  • Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction (down is great).
  • Treat ALL firearms as if they were loaded.
  • Keep your trigger finger outside the trigger guard and off of the trigger until you are ready to fire.
  • Be certain of your target, your line of fire, and what lies beyond your target.
  • Always wear appropriate eye and ear protection when shooting and maintaining your firearm.

What is Situational Awareness Training?

What is Situational Awareness Training and why spend a day learning about it? Because this training is a mindset that can save lives.

What is Situational Awareness Training?

Situational Awareness Defined

Situational awareness (SA) is the perception of environmental elements with respect to time or space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status after some variable has changed, such as time, or some other variable, such as a predetermined event.
Situation Awareness Definition:

  • Perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of space
  • Comprehension of their meaning
  • Projection of their status in the near future

Practical Definition – paying attention to and knowing what is going on around you!
Just a couple weeks ago, some agents from the D.O.E. came to visit us (ESS is the only security training facility in Florida that is D.O.E. approved).
The conversation turned to the recent terror attack at the Orlando nightclub, when one of the government agents asked us “if there was anything we could think of” that would have stopped it, or at least mitigate the loss of life.
What is Situational Awareness Training?First, we noted that terrorism is a tactic not exclusive to any one particular group and that the tactic would not end even if the jihadist threat were to disappear. In the Orlando incident it appears it was a “sympathizer”. We then discussed how people planning terrorist attacks have to follow a planning process and noted that there are times during that process when such plots are vulnerable to detection.
Regardless of the threat origin, it is very important to recognize that terrorist attacks and criminal activity do not materialize out of thin air. In fact, quite the opposite is true. Both terrorists and criminals follow a process when planning their actions, and this process has several distinct steps. This process has traditionally been referred to as the “attack cycle”. But if one looks at the issue thoughtfully, it becomes apparent that the same steps apply to nearly all crimes as well. Of course, there will be more time between steps in a complex crime like a kidnapping or club massacre than there will be between steps in a simple crime such as purse-snatching or armed robbery, where these steps can be completed more rapidly. Nevertheless, the same steps are generally followed.
That lead to about a 30-minute conversation. But the bottom line is this (and if you have watched any time travel movie you’d agree) if just one person had attended a situational awareness training, it may not have even happened.

What is Situational Awareness Training and Why is it Valuable?

First, what is Situational Awareness Training?
In its most elemental form, situational awareness is simply being aware of what is going on around you.
But let’s back up for a minute.
What is Situational Awareness Training - you don't zone outThere are driving courses and there are defensive driving courses. The difference between them? Defensive driving courses incorporate elements of situational awareness (though you may not have realized it at the time).
If you have taken defensive driving lessons, you still enjoy the ride because you are more confidant — the same way you still enjoy life after situational awareness training.
But, ever arrive at your destination only to realize you were daydreaming while driving and every turn and stop you made was “automatic” and you can’t remember any of it?

Sadly, far too many of us live our lives in that same exact way.

Situational awareness is more of a mindset than a hard skill.
It is important to understand that situational awareness — being aware of one’s surroundings and identifying potential threats and dangerous situations — is more of a mindset than a hard skill. Because of this, situational awareness is not something that can be practiced only by highly-trained government agents or specialized security teams–Situational awareness can be exercised by anyone with the will to do so. Situational awareness is not only important for recognizing terrorist threats, but it also serves to identify criminal behavior and other dangerous situations.
Secondly, an important element of situational awareness training is the realization that you need to take responsibility for your own safety and security. Government resources are finite. The police can’t be everywhere. They can’t stop every terror attack and criminal activity. This same principle also applies to businesses, and other institutions like churches and schools.
Most importantly, you’ll learn to trust your “gut”.
From Colorado to Washington to California to Paris, to right here in Florida, there have been mass attacks, not to mention the everyday personal assaults, carjacking and robberies.

Who should take situational awareness training?

Security Guards, Office Workers, EMT/First Responders, Bodyguards, Bartenders, just about everyone!

SA training is valuable to anyone and everyone, but is a necessary training for;

  • security guards
  • executive protection/close protection/bodyguards
  • store clerks
  • office workers
  • waitresses/bartenders
  • EMT/first responders
  • shelter workers
  • and anyone in contact with the general public

During the situational awareness course we will take you through an interactive training session, show you how to be more in tune with your environment and why Situational Awareness is so important.
This has real applications for nearly everyone, but more importantly, after training, you have a life skill.

Levels of Awareness – Cooper’s Color Codes

What is Situational Awareness Training in Tampa by ESS Global CorpAccording to Lt Col. Jeff Cooper, recognized as the father of the modern technique of handgun shooting, the most important means of surviving a lethal confrontation is not the weapon or the martial skills.
The Primary Tool is Situational Awareness.
People typically operate on five distinct levels of awareness.

  • Level 1 – White

The first level, white, speaks of being completely unaware and unprepared. It is similar to when you are engrossed in thought, conversation, a daydream, a song on the radio or even by the kids fighting in the backseat. Increasingly, cellphone calls and texting are also causing people to tune out while they drive. Have you ever arrived somewhere in your vehicle without even really thinking about your drive there? If so, then you’ve experienced being in white. Level white is unaware and unprepared. “Daydreaming” or “preoccupied”, oblivious to possible threat. If attacked in Condition White, the only thing that may save you is the inadequacy of your attacker.
Your main enemy is reaction time. If you are not aware of your surroundings, and fail to see the suspicious character, he may overwhelm you before you can effective defend yourself. If you’re caught in Condition White, you will need several seconds to even realize what is happening and respond. You simply don’t have that much time. This level of awareness we want to try to avoid especially when out in public. Individuals in white are much more likely to not notice nor respond to possible threats in their environment in enough time to remain safe.
Example – When in your own home, with the doors locked and the alarm set. The very instant you leave your home, you escalate one level, to Condition Yellow.
Level 2- Yellow
The second level of awareness, Yellow, is referred to as relaxed alertness. This is a state in which you are relaxed but are also assessing everything around you. You are able to enjoy whatever it is you are doing, while at the same time be aware of what is happening around you. There is no specific threat but you are ready for anything. This is the level of awareness we most often want to be in. An individual that learns how to maintain in Yellow is a lot more likely to notice and react to stimuli (possible threats) in their environment. Tiny drip of adrenaline.
Examples – You are in a convenience store with your family. You are aware of others in the store and you instinctively note possible points of entry or exit. Or, you are driving and as you drive you are aware of not only your driving skills, but others around you.
Level 3 – Orange
The next level of awareness, Orange, is referred to as specific alert or focused awareness. In this level you have seen, heard or smelled something that has elevated you to this level and has now focused your attention to a certain matter.  You are now starting to ask yourself, “If this happens, what will I do?” You will be able to start coming up with a plan. Even a little more adrenaline enters the system.
Examples – While in the convenient store with your family and a man walks in and is wearing a jacket in summertime. It doesn’t look right. So you start looking for exits or possible cover. Or, you are crossing an intersection and a car looks as though it’s not going to stop. You are quickly deciding whether or not to press the brake or gas petal.
Level 4 – Red
The fourth level of awareness is Red, and is referred to as high alert or fight trigger. This is the level that induces an adrenaline rush, a prayer and a gasp for air all at the same time. Whatever you thought might happen while in orange has now happened. High alert can be scary, but at this level you are still able to function. In fact, the adrenaline rush you get at this stage can sometimes aid your reflexes.
Examples – That man has placed his hands in his jacket and now pulls out a gun. Because you were aware and prepared, you have already moved yourself and your family towards an exit and are able to exit. Or, that car that looked like it wasn’t stopping, doesn’t, and because you were aware and prepared, are able to either push the brake or gas petal to avoid an accident.
The last level of awareness, Black, is what happens when you literally freeze or experience shut down and cannot respond to stimuli, either because you are petrified or because you didn’t cycle the adrenaline through your system by using the other levels and are now incapacitated by the massive dump of adrenaline. It is this panic-induced paralysis that concerns us most in relation to situational awareness. This is the level where you go into shock, your brain ceases to process information and you simply cannot react to the reality of the situation. Many times when this happens, a person can go into denial, believing that “this can’t be happening to me,” or the person can feel as though he or she is observing the event rather than actually participating in it. Often, the passage of time will seem to grind to a halt. Crime victims frequently report experiencing this sensation and being unable to act during an unfolding crime.
In essence, you become the victim through lack of planning or awareness or planning on your part. Black is NOT where you want to be.
Examples – You were in white, never in yellow and were caught by surprise by the gunman or the other vehicle. And now, when you do realize it’s too late. You most likely will not be able to react or react in time. People in white generally transition directly to black.
Most people have no idea about situational awareness.
It is an unfortunate fact that most people stumble through life, blissfully unaware of the world around them. They remain preoccupied in their own thoughts of work, personal problems or other mundane issues, with no thought given to their immediate environment. But, by not paying attention to their surroundings, they place themselves in needless jeopardy.
What is Situaltional Awareness Training? Fewer trips to the ERTo fully understand this phenomena, go take a seat in the nearest hospital emergency room waiting area one evening. Observe the unfortunate people who come in for treatment and you will get an excellent illustration of this point. You will see that roughly 20% of the individuals are actually sick, so you can ignore them. Some others are overdoses so you can ignore them as well. The remaining majority are there because they did not pay attention to their environment. These will be the folks who walked off the edge of the loading dock, stepped off roofs, backed into running machinery, touched a red hot stove burner, stepped into the path of a vehicle, or allowed a thug to walk right up to them unnoticed and hit them in the head with a brick, brandished a knife, or worse, pulled out a gun and shot them.
You can be inattentive, and oblivious (blindfolded) in your work environment day-in and day-out and be lucky, until one day the odds catch up with you and you are injured.
What is Situational Awareness Training? It can save your lifeThe same exact principle applies to the street; individuals, businesses, colleges, churches and more. You can be inattentive and oblivious (blindfolded) and get away with it until your path crosses the path of a criminal or intersects with violent situation. The vast majority of criminals are opportunists, who only strike when presented with a viable, easy opportunity.
An “easy mark”.
But….

Remove the opportunity and you remove the risk to yourself.

What is Situation Awareness Training?

Perceive – Understand – Think Ahead – All without having to work at it.

What is situational awareness training? - It removes the blindfoldsWhat is situational awareness training? At ESS Global, we remove your blindfolds. Blindfolds are for wine tasting, not for living your life safely.

After an ESS training, you won’t be saying…

  • “I never saw it coming.”
  • “He came out of nowhere.”
  • “I had no idea he was even there.”

These are phrases uttered by people who ended up in bad situations. They did not see the danger or threat before it became a serious problem.
Situational awareness is much more than some tactical, combat-centric skill set. It is as much of a lifestyle as it is a skill. The applications of this awareness are infinite and reach into all aspects of our daily lives. In the most basic way, situational awareness is about being plugged directly into your environment and the people in it.
In the ESS Global Situational Awareness training class, you will learn the skills utilized by distinguished branches of the military, such as the Coast Guard and Secret Service.
What exactly is “situational awareness”? It’s “paying attention” to what is going on around you.  It’s more than that, but the basic definition is the ability to scan the environment and sense danger, while maintaining the ability to conduct normal activities. In other words, to pay attention to your surroundings while not appearing to be paying attention.
What is Situational Awareness Training? - ESS in TampaThe first step in situational awareness is to step out of the world of denial. During The ESS Global Situational Awareness Training, you will leave the “it can’t happen to me” world behind you. Situational awareness is knowing what and who is around you and the potential threats they might pose to you or your family/ loved ones. You assess the current situation and people around you by gathering information, processing that information, and then figuring out if any action is required. Situational awareness can help you avoid confrontations, fights or other harmful situations. Not only can situational awareness save your own life, but also other innocent lives around you. The military, the government, law enforcement agencies and self-defense experts all train, use, and practice situational awareness.
situational awareness training in tampaDeveloping awareness is a skill and the ESS Global Situational Awareness Training will give you the skill sets that last a lifetime. At first it will seem very awkward and self-conscious, but with practice, it will become seamless and subconscious. You will start to pick up on more and more subtle rings of disturbance and more complex stimuli from the world around you. Eventually, some people may even think you are psychic as they begin to notice how you seem to sense events before they unfold.
This Situational Awareness Training in Tampa is a 4- 5 hour class depending on class size and focus.

Executive Protection – Compromise vs Convenience

Executive Protection – Compromise vs Convenience – Executive protection is not only about protection. It is about the entire experience for our client.

Executive Protection – Compromise vs Convenience

BieberExecutive protection is not just about protection. It is in fact about the entire experience for our client. Now, while most of what we do is based upon security, some of it is simply based upon pleasing our client. We always teach in our courses here at ESS Global Corporation Executive Protection School, that you will always be balancing Compromise vs Convenience.
That is the compromise of security that we must allow to enable the convenience of the client. As Executive Protection agents, we are always security minded and want to keep security at a high level. Unfortunately, high levels of security are not always convenient for our clients. While we would like to keep them locked down under our supervision 24/7, they like to go outside, go shopping, go eat, etc. In order to do this, we have to drop the level of security a little bit to achieve this.
Now, this does not mean that we drop all security measures. It just means that we now have to be even more vigilant and aware than ever. Make sure you are always in YELLOW. Remember, we can never tell our clients NO. Well at least not in most cases. So, if they ask us to go somewhere, and we have advised them that it is dangerous to go there (like a nightclub), and yet they still wish to go, we must take them. And, if exactly what you warned them about happens, even though you advised them not to go there, guess who will be at fault. That’s right, YOU! We are always at fault.
Executive Protection - Compromise vs ConvenienceFor these reasons, it is extremely important to know your clients likes and dislikes so you can be prepared for moments like these and can perform a proper security advance to at least reduce the risk. While it still isn’t perfect, as most things are not in the Executive Protection industry, it will be safer. Knowing your clients likes and dislikes is first achieved through the client interview. unfortunately, this technique rarely used or even taught anymore .
Remember, in anything, to be successful you must master the basics.

Client profiling or client interviews are part of the basics in ESS Global Executive Protection.

Executive Protection Training – A Guide to EP

Executive Protection Training, comes down to the syllabus and the trainers, and ESS has both. Approved by the D.O.E.  – Approved by the VA to accept GI Bill Benefits – Trainers with Real World Experience.

Executive Protection Training – A Guide to EP

The very first thing you must ask yourself when looking for executive protection training;

“Am I prepared to enter the world of EP?”

You genuinely need to determine if you are ready, both physically and psychologically, before you begin your search for an Executive Protection Training School (there are very few “schools” most are “facilities” – more on that later)
Additionally, ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I willing to take another human being’s life to save my own or the life of another?
  • Am I capable of defending another, or myself and then render first aid and/or CPR to the very person I just injured?
  • Am I ready to face the consequences of my actions and defend those actions in a court of law?
  • What about the effects of my actions on my family and my friends, how will the public view my actions?

No other executive protection training facility will tell you to ask yourself these questions, because each of the answers to these questions should actually create new questions to be answered, depending on which direction you have chosen.
The bottom line is there is much more to think about executive protection training, and how best to choose where to train for this type of occupation.
Let’s clear the air.
Executive Protection Training - A guide to EP post
Before we get too far, you should know that Executive Protection is one of many names used to describe what we do here at ESS Global Corp.  However, you will frequently see or hear terms like Bodyguarding, Close Protection, Personal Protection and Protective Service used interchangeably with Executive Protection.  All these terms mean the same thing.
The one term that we don’t use much here at ESS, is “Bodyguarding”. We are Executive Protection Agents, Close Protection Agents, Personal Protection Agents or Protective Service Agents.  We are never Bodyguards!  Unfortunately stereotypes and the media have spoiled that term.

Whether you take the 3-day Executive Protection Training, or the 28 Mega Executive Protection Course at ESS Global, you will clearly understand the difference between a “bodyguard” and an “executive protective specialist”.

General Traits That Match Executive Protection

  • Executive Protection Training - A Guide to EPCommon Sense and Quick Thinking
  • Never Assumes (Trust but Verify)
  • Maintains Low Profile
  • Always Aware
  • Intelligent
  • Punctual
  • Works Well With Others
  • Clean Cut/ Good Hygiene
  • Articulate
  • and above all, Honest

The stereotype we have seen in movies and on TV is a 300 lb. guy with enormous muscles and a pea sized brain, who’s first instinct is to throw punches (or bodies).
Today’s Protective Agent is usually found in a business suit, presenting a discreet and subdued image.  They are seen, but not noticed, as they try to maintain a low profile.  They are fit, but usually of normal build or stature.  This helps them blend into the background of their client’s business and activities without drawing any undue attention.  They are highly trained and highly skilled professionals.  There are some excellent agents that do look like the stereotype, but they have the intelligence to match the stature, and that makes them professional.
The Purpose of Executive Protection
While kidnapping and assassination are rare (at least in the US) they can occur. With Executive Protection the primary focus is to protect the client from any bodily harm. What we find in today’s volatile climate, that heckling, menacing, rushing and thrown objects are more prevalent than ever.
Typical Assignments in the World of Executive Protection
What kind of work can you expect?
It varies with each and every client, but here are some generalities.
Home/Office Protection:  It’s more likely than not that an actual attack will most likely occur at the principal’s home or office. Learn to examine and develop strategies to thwart those efforts using threat analysis, safe rooms, technology, barriers, exterior perimeter controls and more. This is often referred to as “Estate Protection
Domestic and International Travel: Learn the fundamentals of domestic and international travel security including pre-travel planning, coordination, communication, ground travel and hotel/restaurant/venue security employing a street smart attitude. Study pattern of crime against travelers, counter-surveillance and kidnapping prevention.
Venue and Engagement:  Meetings, speaking engagements, concerts, and more. Focus on protecting principals and explore up-to-date concepts including embus and debus, motorcade planning and operation, vehicle escort procedures, protect against dignitary/executive/celebrity stalkers.
executive protection training - a guide to EP celebrity/high worthThe simple fact is as we barrel towards 2019, there is no doubt that “personal protection” is a growing field. As you read this guide to EP, there are thousands and thousands of military and government leaders, business executives, religious figures, celebrities and families are being personally protected. And the numbers grow every day.
Executive Protection is the fastest growing segment of the security industry. There is tremendous growth in the corporate world.
Globalization – The increasing globalization that has taken place means that companies can no longer depend on their home market if they want to grow and sustain their competitive advantage. Much of their growth is now taking place in new emerging markets, including developing nations that are often not as safe as more developed countries.
Income Gap – At the same time, income gaps between the very high net-worth and others continue to widen and threats to the wealthy continue to increase. Add in terrorism, whether it’s abroad or the homegrown variety, an you’ll find a mounting threat to executives, media stars, celebrities, sports figures and the religious that we have not seen before in our lifetime.
Executive Protection Training - A guide to EP Corporate securityCorporate Security – Another trend is that Corporate Security Departments are changing fast and among the diverse and growing range of security services corporations must integrate, executive protection is probably the least integrated of all the corporate security services. Many corporate security directors don’t have experience with writing or implementing an EP strategy, and even fewer of them have conducted Risk, Threat and Vulnerability Assessments (RTVAs), which form the foundation of a Quality Executive Protection Program.
The good news for aspiring protection agents is that there are new jobs opening up, working either directly for corporations or for the Executive Protection companies that service them. Same for some small business owners, like jewelers for instance. And nearly every celebrity, VIP and politician has EP agents.

How to Get Started.

So you’ve read this far and you’re thinking “This is for Me”.
Great.

At this point, you need to know that when choosing an Executive Protection “school” – Do not worry yourself with the fancily named certificates they have waiting for you – but rather investigate the certifications the school has. By doing so, you gain far greater insight into the quality of training.

A Guide to Executive Protection Training

Now let’s look at the current state of training.
Perhaps you’ve heard some horror stories or maybe you have experienced them yourselves. The let down and anger you feel when you pay hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on training courses, only to find out the course material or the instructors themselves were less than mediocre. Unfortunately, this is an all too common experience that many students have and will continue to endure in the Security and Executive Protection industries.
Why?
Executive Protection training - A guide to EP 3While most states have mandatory courses for Security Guards, even unarmed ones, and these are regulated by the state. But in most states the executive protection training industry is unregulated.
For Executive Protection training, there are a only a handful of states, if that, that have anything resembling a state regulated course. This means that when you attend an Executive Protection school, it’s more than likely nobody is regulating what is being taught or who it is being taught by. This means you are basically taking a gamble and hoping that what you are being taught is accurate, and the person teaching it is experienced. To be honest, this is rarely the case with most Executive Protection “facilities”.
What you will likely find, is that the school was opened by a retired “law enforcement officer” or “DoD personnel” or an “ex Israeli operative” or somebody that took a course at another school and saw the potential to make money. Regardless, most schools are being taught by those who have spent little to no time actually working in the EP industry. And, since the states don’t regulate these courses, this will continue.
Executive Protection training - Use someone who does itThis is why it is extremely important when searching for executive protection training, to research your school and your instructors. Make certain that not only have your instructors worked in the Executive Protection industry, but they are active in it now! Remember, the Executive Protection industry is evolving rapidly, especially in the corporate world and EP changes just like any industry. If you are planning on attending a school where the instructor is the same person instructing for the last 20-30 years, you may want to find out how many jobs they have worked in those last 20-30 years. We are willing to bet you will be surprised.
Look for a D.O.E. Approved “School” When Searching for Executive Protection Training
executive protection training - look for a D.O.E. schoolThis is why we always recommend that you go through a school that is licensed through the department of education (D.O.E.). Then, you know that both their curriculum and instructors have had to of been reviewed and approved. All instructors have had background checks performed on them and have had to provide credentials that attest to their knowledge and ability to properly instruct. Additionally, the course syllabus is reviewed and approved.
While even this isn’t perfect, it’s better than there being no check and balance system like it is at the majority of EP “schools”.

ESS Global Certifications

  • Approved by the D.O.E.
  • Approved by the VA to Accept GI Bill Benefits
  • Approved by the VA and the D.O.E. for VA Vocational Rehabilitation

Get Certified!

When choosing a facility for executive protection training, be alarmed when you see phrases like;

  • “Get your protection specialist credentials from ABC”
  • “Earn your certificate in executive protection at XYZ”
  • “We are the only school where you can earn 2 certificates in one training”

Or any Executive Protection Training School that talks about the “certifications” and “credentials” they have for you, more than they discuss their own school “certifications” and trainer “credentials”.
You have been warned.
Look at the ESS Global Site, and the one thing you won’t find anywhere is anything like that. Because it’s a piece of paper and nothing more.
That being said, there are some real certifications from organizations such as ASP, Red Cross and others that a few EP courses across the nation offer including ESS.

executive protection training - there are no official certifications - it's all just PaperIf you are searching for an executive protection training, and if there is one thing you take away from this EP guide;

  • There are no EP “certifications”.
  • There are EP “credentials”.
  • There is no EP “residency” program.
  • There are no “degrees”
  • Online training is a scam (we’ve never seen someone successfully defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat on a laptop)

There is no “Certified Protection Specialist Certification”, but you have to admit that’s a neat way to get “certify” into a 4 word phrase twice for good measure. Looks impressive, right?

Why do they do this?
Because “Certifications will only be given to people that complete our course.” (we have your money now).

But it’s comforting to know they are not printing them off and handing these worthless pieces of paper to folks walking down the street.

You Need to Know
In the protection industry, there is no “license”, no testing, and no boards in most states. Executive Protection is usually lumped into the same category as Security Guards or Private Investigation and has little to do with either. Yet we see training to earn your “certified protection specialist credentials” advertised online. Unfortunately, nobody is regulating these schools, training centers and trainers. Meaning, nobody regulates or monitors what is taught and who is teaching it. Anybody off the street could be teaching you false and/or misleading information and you are paying for it. So your “protection credentials” at the end of the day is a piece of paper from the trainer and nothing more.
Trademarks and Other Tricks
Executive Protection Training - A Guide to EP - Trade marks? Really? No single school owns the basic concepts of executive protection training. We’ve seen websites where they have trademarks (TM) on common phrases like “certified protection operator” or “certified protection specialist” to make them look even more “official”.
While some schools and instructors will try to give you the impression they invented, own or somehow refined EP skills all by themselves.

The simple fact is that everyone in the EP industry has learned from someone before them.

The Bottom Line

executive protection training
At some point, anyone that wants to work in EP will need to attend a credible EP School. Here at ESS Global, we’ve spoke with ex-law enforcement, security guards, ex-military and more that heartily disagree with that statement. But when they attend our Executive Protection Training they are in agreement, generally saying in unison, “I never knew any of that.”
The bottom line is there is no school, no facility, no instructor, that can teach you everything you need to know in 1, 3, 7, 15, 30 or 365 days. It’s just not possible.
What you do need to do, to begin a career in EP, is you need to get a solid foundation. That is what matters most. Not a piece of paper. For a building to stand the test of time, it needs a foundation. It’s no different for Executive Protection Training. Down the road, you can focus on other specific training to further your career, depending on the path you take. But you need a solid foundation without the fluff.

Virtra Simulator for active shooter in ESS Executive Protection TrainingIn addition to being the only D.O.E Certified Executive Protection School here in Florida, we are the only school offering active shooter training as part of our Bodyguard/Executive Protection training via the only VirTra Simulator here in Tampa Florida and the 1 of only 2 pubic installations in the entire country. It’s a close to real as you’ll ever get. And ESS Global is currently the only Executive Protection Training in the country utilizing this state of the art tool.
Why do we use it?
One critical component of a quality executive protection training is the ‘realism’ it provides. Real-world performance is often directly related to the realism and intensity of training. Said another way, the more realistic the training exercise, the more skills are transferable to a real-world situation. Thus, realism is critically important to any close combat tactical trainer. Threats during training – The stress of receiving return fire, can be safely simulated with the Threat-Fire in the VirTra simulator.

Again, take the time to research your school and its instructors. And while we know there are very few D.O.E licensed Executive Protection schools in the country, we also know it is worth the expense of traveling and lodging to attend a quality school rather than waste your money at a school that gives you below average training (but you will get a certificate you can frame!).
